Handbag friendly compact

Post by Leigh »

So Christmas is round the corner and the wife needs a new compact camera. Her current Ixus is starting to feel rather slow and she often misses photos due to shutter lag or focusing issues.

So what should i be looking at? Budget up to £300. Quite liking the Lumix range as always seem to get good reviews but dont know which models to look at etc?

Thanks

SONY RX100 pretty much as good as a compact ever gets for under crazy cash, second to none out there.

Gladly the RX100-2 came out and the RX100 dropped to a lower price so may be able to be bought for around the £300 mark

Canon S110 is only £250 on Amazon. Can't vouch for it personally but I love my S95 and my friend loves his S100, so I'd assume it continues the trend. Nice blend of point and shoot user friendliness and pro features.

I didn't suggest it because I've not seen new ones for less than 350, so too pricey.

Sony looks nice but the optical zoom is only 3.6x, could probably do with something more than that but will investigate further

Yup I see the RX100 on Amazon as well for that price :) I was just was about to post that myself, yup a snap at that price. I paid £400+ for an overseas gray market version 6 months ago, as the prices never ever dropped to even that low! so another £100 off is a cracker.

The 3.6 times zoom is deceiving as it has such good image quality and 20MP images you can actually zoom in a lot and crop your photos surprisingly well without losing much at all.
