'Hundreds of buildings damaged' in lower Manhattan

It is being reported that rescue efforts in New York are being hampered by fears of further collapses among "hundreds" of damaged buildings in the area around the devastated World Trade Centre.

At least 12 buildings surrounding the site are severely damaged and at risk of collapse.

Fire officials said that the nine-storey high 5 World Trade Centre building and the Millennium Hilton Hotel were in danger of collapsing.

The fall of another unidentified 20-storey high building is also expected imminently.

U.S. planes attack southern Iraq, destroy houses

BAGHDAD, Sep 13, 2001 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- U.S. and British planes attacked Iraq's Wassit Province, about 170 kilometers south of Baghdad, on Thursday, destroying a number of houses, the official Iraqi News Agency said.
In a brief report from the area, the agency said the planes "haphazardly fired" air-to-surface missiles on villages in the province.

The report did not mention any casualties.

Seems like the US & UK can't wait

Well, I finally read all of this thread. It took me most of the evening at work, too. It is a fascinating (and scary) thread with all the rumors, theories, threats, accusations, fears and compassion running into each other.

The only opinion I can give is: Why can't we be nice to each other? How hard IS it?

Must go now. Next shift just arriving. Catch the late news when I get home (I got True Lies in the mail today and I keep wishing the terrorists were green or purple)

Everything seems OK to me too and the NYPD channel is working now. :) Apparently, 80% of the net is down due to the destruction of many servers/hard disks / etc from yesterday's incidents.

My Mum was just telling me that Hotels have increased their prices enormously around the WTC and places where people have been affected or planes diverted to! This is an outrage! How can they be so cold? As a result people are letting people stay in their homes in spare bedrooms or something.

This isn't related as US and UK planes regularly patrol no-fly zones in Iraq and surrounding regions. Planes are downed and civilian buildings (with nearly all the time someone getting killed) bombed all the time.

The volume of bomb scares coming through on the NYPD channel over the last twentyfour hours has been amazing :O Is this a jumpy police force or a large number of sick trouble-makers  Both, I imagine...

And yes, the first few pages of this thread make interesting reading.....

Phew - that was a strain on my almighty powers :shocker:

I am locking this thread, so it is not used for discussion, but merely so people can refresh their memories of those horrid moments.

This thread has been put back up at the request of many, many forum members.

edit - As a lot of people are downloading the thread in its entirity (which will put a big additional strain on our main server) I have archived the entire thread (including any graphics) and put the whole lot into a zip file for download. The file is 2Mb in size.
I have set the views to 100 replies per page which brings the thread down to 14 pages in size.

As we're now just over a week from the tenth anniversary, I thought it would be worth bumping this thread to make it easier to find as I'm sure a lot of people will be interesting to read how history unfolded on that day.
