Does anyone know if there is a plugin (or if this is possible without one) to do the following:

I want to have 8 individual service pages that will all have a featured image and excerpt text and I want to be able to easily add a smaller preview of these 8 pages on the home page, i.e. smaller featured image, the excerpt text and a "find out more" link to the full page.

This was a built-in feature for a theme I was using for a previous project - I just had to add a "Featured Page" element to the home page for each of the individual service pages, you selected the page and it automatically pulled in the featured image, the excerpt text and added a "find out more" link - but I can't seem to do it with the theme I'm currently using.

What you're describing sounds like a post listing, but for pages - is that correct ?
So instead of displaying your latest news/blog, each service links to a page ?

Yes, that seems to be correct.

After spending some time researching or trying to research this I can see that this looks to be possible for Posts but not for Pages, which made it hard to search because I kept getting results for Posts, rather than Pages.

No. I wasn't able to find anything.

I did think that maybe I could copy over the widget file from the other theme but I'm not sure I'll be able to do that.

I'll just create the "features pages" manually on the home page for this project.

Well, you could:
1) newly create the pages as posts.
or
2) convert your existing pages to posts >> https://wordpress.org/plugins/post-type-switcher/
or
3) use a widget to display pages >> https://wordpress.org/plugins/recently/

Has anyone built an job board/job search/employment WordPress website?

I'm currently looking for a suitable theme that has all the features I need (CV Upload, Apply Now, Register Vacancy, Candidate Area, etc) or possible plugins and thought I'd ask here for any recommendations or experience using a theme.

My only experience is using the free version of WP Job Manager to create a quick mockup site.

Worked well out of the box, as you'd expect from Automattic, but despite some free code snippets, do be aware of pricey addons, and don't expect much support.

Personally, I would go with a dedicated theme - of those you listed, due to latest reviews and support, I would choose only between WorkScout and Careerfy. The author of WorkScout has a broad portfolio of themes (experienced, well-established), whereas the author of Careerfy puts most of its efforts into this theme (and the standalone plugin).

Those two themes were the ones that I was most interested in.

It looks like WorkScout is built specifically to work with WP Job Manager and uses their core add-ons, which are included with the theme but the license is not. In order to receive auto-updates I would need to purchase the core add-on bundle license ($150/$105 per year).

Whereas Careerfy is built using their own plugin, so no need to pay for an extra yearly license to use all of the features.

I'll have a closer look at them and make sure they cover all of the features I need.

If you've not yet updated to WP 5.9, best to stay on 5.8.3 for a few weeks, as plenty people are seeing issues.

There are a few known bugs to be squashed (eg: image gallery), problems using the Editor, and some unlucky folks are losing their sites (temporarily).

For me, running the update on all 10 of my sites on a single host maxed out the server resources (never been a problem before) which then caused the update to fail part-way through on 5 of the sites, taking them down. So 5 sites on this host worked OK, and 6 sites across 2 other hosts were also OK.

I updated one yesterday - a new one I was just going live with - but didn’t spot any issues.

I’ll hold off updating any others for now.

At least now, there will be plenty of online help, as people will have found and posted their solutions.

The gallery bug is annoying, but not a showstopper - drag/drop to rearrange the images is no longer working (and still not fixed). The workaround depending on your gallery plugin/module is simple to tick the photos in the required order.

Anybody updated to WP 6.0 ? Few problems so far (main WP forum), although I've not taken the plunge yet.

As always, ensure you have backups (cPanel/server host method is by far the best), and update themes and plugins first, then WP.
