GeForce Now

Doesn't look like there's a thread for this...

Anyone using it?

It's another attempt to make a game streaming service that will be just a little bit **** because it's physically impossible to make it good.

I just had a quick test on my phone and it seemed to stream pretty well.
Seems it doesn't do 4k unless I'm missing something so won't be something I'll use long term till that

Also finding games is a pita

Oh I'm sure it looks nice. It'll be the input lag that'll suck. Though that's not really going to affect you if you're playing on a phone.

But you're gonna hate anything that requires quick reactions on a proper input device.

I tried it during the Beta. My biggest gripe was that it was like playing games on a PC! Which means I was in and out of the graphic settings menus every 5 seconds.

I've tried it at work on our 10Gb connection and also at home on my ~80Mbps connection and from brief testing it worked amazingly well on both! I only tried Doom 2016 but that's a game where latency on controls is key and it worked really well.

Surely Nvidia themselves have sufficient hardware that you can just whack it on ultra?

I have a 5 year old PC with a 3 year old GPU and I can get away with that on pretty much everything. Alright, it was high end gear at the time but it's old and I imagine Nvidia have better.

That's what I expected. It's probably better now.

They were using a Quadro GPU when I tried it (1080 equivalent IIRC) and performance on DOOM (2016) was pretty crap.

Edit: OK I tried it just now and the Doom overlay is reporting a Tesla P40. Runs very nicely. Compression muddies it a bit.

The other thing that used to bug me and is still present - the need to enter your Steam password each time you launch a game session AND there's no copy/paste allowed. Not sure what happens if you let it remember your password, but that's not exactly something I want to do on a shared remote machine.

Yeah, that's stupid. I expected an account link

1080p60 is the maximum at the moment it seems.

Yes, and even then it's not *that* great fps. Playing Doom struggles a bit with everything on Ultra settings, even though it shows the GPU as a Tesla P40 with 24Gb of RAM. What you don't know if how many other VMs you're sharing this hardware with. High settings seem to work fairly well at 60fps though. Really the games should somehow be pre-configured to allow for 60fps, it's a downside to basically offering PC games in this way, you still have to fiddle with settings to get the right FPS. I don't know if paying the Ł5 a month guarantees you access to more resources to your session compared to sharing.

1 other "issue" I've noticed is that the audio appears to be stereo only, definitely not 5.1 like it would be playing natively (I play on a TV with AV receiver so used to playing PC games in 5.1).

It's better than it was a few years ago latency wise, I've sideloaded it onto my Firestick from my phone and played a bit of Destiny 2 on it. Connection test fails on all my devices even when the correct ports are Whitelisted on my Router, all Android devices will stream OK regardless but no Windows Client will as it keeps saying I'm not connected even though it picks the correct server. I still prefer Local hardware gaming though.

I use a Shield, love it. Not got a PC so can only play supported games.

Edit: Forgot to say, One thing I can’t work out is the Shield doesn’t want to use my full bandwidth. When I do a test, it show about 30 meg (all other devices report around 70, which is right) download and sometimes Steam games complain.

Interesting. Did the sideload work okay?
Can you connect an Xbox pad to the Firestick?

Well, just tried Dirt (because it happens to be one of the few games I have) via the 4k.
Terrible. At least a second between button press and action.
