Fortnite

Announced at last nights VGA Awards. Looks like a different direction for Epic looks like a CoD Zombies/Team Fortress mash up. I assume Xbox only??

Looks like a FPS defence game, nice idea. Don't think it's been confirmed as a 360 exclusive though.

I'm not sold. It's not like we haven't had any FPS or Zombie games recently.

Well... Not so much XBox360 anymore. But the game is currently out as a 4 days headstart on PC, XBox One and PS4.

If you scroll down the website, it does a decent job of introducing the game: https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/

I also found this video useful to get started:

I was playing it with my 15 yeard old son yesterday. We only had time to go through the tutorials and the first mission as a duo. But I have to say it seems like it should be quite a bit of fun, especially if you can get a regular group going together.

It's part Orcs Must Die type tower defense, part shooter, part world exploration and scavenging. There is also base and fortress building which turned out to be surprisingly fun. My son and I spent nearly as much time building silly platforms in the sky and breaking down houses to uncover secret rooms as actually worrying about the mission.

The game is very polished. Main downside is that there are many layers of progression (besides characters and gear) and it all feels a bit overwhelming.

But if you can dive in with a few friends (the latter maps and missions are not meant for solo players), this could turn out to be quite a blast.

It's already known to be going f2p in 2018. So if you don't want to spend money on it, you can always give it a few months.

I love the silliness of this game. On our first mission, my son and I started by chopping down trees, breaking up cars and building the odd shortcut to attics full of hidden junk / treasures (notice the "remodelled" house in the back).

But before you knew it, we had decided to use the houses as raw materials to get a crafting reward. It started with a platform or 2.

Soon, we were running across the level on byzantine skyways with little shelters built high up in the air.

Scavenging and building is a lot of fun. The user interface feels fiddly at first, yet powerful and intuitive enough to get stuff up in no time.

We only start the fighting part of the mission after we had had our fill of running around building random stuff and finding all the blu glow (special resources scattered across the level). I like that the game let us take the time to have fun with the map it had generated for us.

I think I'll definitely enjoy playing the game with my kids and friends who aren't in a rush to immediately start the combat part of the mission.

I have sunk many hours into this since release and think its great fun. Its like a better PVZ defence kinda game, without the plants of course. Just got to the second world, time to build a new base

I've started playing with my daughter as well and still having a blast with it. The mix of building, exploration, loot and tower defence is great.

The main downside is that they have Inception levels of progression between the heroes, squads, schematics, loot, skills, research, ... and the current EA version does a pretty poor job of explaining it all. Epic devs have said they are working on it. But the added guidance can't come soon enough. Or some people will bounce right off.

Fortnite Battle Royal (free to play and standalone) is available on all platforms today. It's apparently similar to PUBG.

Played some tonight on the PS4 (too poor for a PUBG PC which is what I really wanna play ). Seems pretty good generally, and lots for Epic to build upon..loot drops not great, less buildings and smaller map means it seems way more important to get good loot at the start too. Aiming/shooting is pretty rubbish but at least there's a bit of auto-lock on the PS4. Not used much building tools except ramps to upper floors. Looking forward to playing with mates though..squads should be fun.

Starting to struggle with my old 720p panny plasma and older eyes..I couldn't read some of the text in the game!

Been playing this on the PC and I find the Battle Royale mode much more fun than when I played PUBG, the smaller map means there's not so much time wated just running around trying to get back in to the circle!

Played a few battle royal games on Xbone, finished 6th by total luck. For free its great, it gets hell of a nerve racking near the end of game. Never played a PUBG style game before, its pretty intense.

"Ban this sick filth!"

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...ctive-fortnite

Its like the early 2000's again, where useless parents want the games to "parent" their children.

Quote:
But there's also a suggestion that Fortnite is turning kids into aggressive little monsters. Shirley McKenzie, who The Sun reveals is a single mother, says she had to buy a projector for their console after her 12 and nine-year-old smashed a telly in an argument over the game.

Quote:
Call centre worker Kelly, from Cardiff, says she's forked out over £400 over the last three months on Fortnite because her 12-year-old son Tyler is addicted to the game.

"The other day I spent £8 just so his character could do a dance. I give Tyler £15 a week pocket money, which I pay directly into his Xbox account too.

They should see it as an investment. He'll be earning £1m a year streaming on Twitch by the time he's 13.
