Shake Head 'Citizen Khan' - New BBC 'Comedy'

I am currently having a knightmare, either that or I really have stumbled across BBC1's new 'comedy' which seems to be some modern retread of a rejected 1970's Alf Garnett script with a Muslim comedic element thrown in.

Yes, this is 'Citizen Khan' which I am astounded ever made it past the pre-approval stage let alone filming and broadcasting. It is terrible in just about every way possible.

The Daily Mail will have a field day with this one!!!

Threads merged.

I've not seen it but if it upsets the Daily Mail then it's ok in my book.

Why? For years people have moaned about Muslims being purely defined by religion to the point of self dehumanisation, then a show which features Muslim characters goofing around and poking fun at their culture is accused of being irresponsible, offensive, etc. I don't think the comedy is any worse than any other family sitcom. It's no Outnumbered obviously but its no worse than the average episode of My Family either.

So we have to laugh just because "funny" muslims are finally being put on screen? jog on.

As an aside, out of the few posts here, who claimed it irresponsible and offensive? i cant see either of those words mentioned anywhere. This just isnt funny.

I forget the name of it now, but a couple of years ago there was a comedy chat show hosted by muslims/hindu's/whatevers which actually was funny. This is efluent from the holy cows rectum.

For someone who hated mrs brown when it first started then sort of warmed to it, I found the first few minutes of this quite amusing. Its a 'pakistani' programme with them spoofing themselves isnt it.

Gonna watch all of it now and will post what I think.

Edit- well its not as bad as some are making out. Light BBC comedy for the masses much like Mrs Brown. Would have liked more nods to British muslim life tho.

But that wasn't what I said at all Danny Dyer. Of course people don't 'have' to find it funny, but they don't have to go to the extent of raising questions over its commissioning either. Have people not seen silly light-hearted sitcoms before, they are pretty much all like this (be it not typically structured around a Pakistani family). If you don't find it funny don't watch it, I tend to avoid everything with Jimmy Carr in it for similar reasons.

200 complaints at the last count for being offensive apparently -

I found it really disappointing. Joke all done to death and much better 10 years ago by Goodness Gracious me.

I also found the "offensive to muslims" ridiculous - it is about a Pakistani family and spoofing the culture not the religion.

Will of course still be watching to see if it gets any better - mainly due to lack of much else on!

There have been loads of complaints about it making a joke of muslims etc. Personally (and I am not a muslim) I don't think it was that offensive to muslims, it was just **** with very old jokes.

But if Peter Kay had written it, it would be hailed as best thing since the last thing he did.

It got good numbers for a late night show on the beeb so they are laughing. Plus all the publicity will mean it's second episode will probably be watched by even more people.

Speaking as a muslim of pakistani origin (shocking revelation I know) I agree with your first paragraph stu.
It is utter nonsense that even "muslims" can't tell when something is comedic about the culture of the country they come from and not at all poking fun at the religion they practice.

Apparently my friends' kids loved it (I didn't let mine stay up to watch it as I wasn't sure what type of humour it would contain at that time slot).

I disagree we would lap it up if Peter Kay wrote it - if anything I think it is getting off lightly because it was written by a Pakistani. Otherwise Kay would be blasted for the dated gags etc etc.
I hope it improves as there is no much scope to poke fun!

Maybe the writer has been turned against his own people, like what they did to Brody in Homeland.
