That's more to do with the terrain they were in - it was mainly desert, so sand as far as the eye could see. You can't compete with variety. The Bolivia trip which crosses the Amazon is still the best one they've made IMO due to the variety of surroundings - jungle, mountains, high altitude desert, dunes.

Who was in Clarkson's buggy when it was just coming to the end of the cable car stretch, as it clearly wasn't him?

I've enjoyed this show so far, it's been more of the same but with a twist and I'm fine with that.

Top Gear was no slouch when it came to cinematography, editing and visual and audio aesthetic, Grand Tour matches what TG did but, IMO, hasn't surpassed it yet. The biggest gripe for me is music choice. TG had a very eclectic mix of licensed music across all tastes and genres, which really added to my enjoyment of the show.

I was watching the Focus RS/Mustang segment and thinking as great as this looks it's really lacking in the music department. GT's soundtrack has been pretty lacklustre so far.

IIRC the BBC have some unique music licensing deal which means they can use pretty much any music in broadcast for a reasonable cost, though not necessarily on DVD or repeats on other channels. Hence the A-Team theme in the engineering bits is replaced with generic music in the Top Gear repeats on Dave.

I did also notice if you pause The Grand Tour it offers links to buy the music that's playing, I wonder if they're only choosing music that can be bought through Amazon?

Well the credits point to a stunt team called something like "Wires" so maybe they did the creation and testing of the cable car and they used some of the test footage in the final shots.

Can't you buy pretty much any music on Amazon? I thought the Beatles were the last major holdout for digital but are there now

I am still enjoying the show but I do miss the real moments of genuine unscripted comedy, even the "unscripted" bits are scripted.

The bit where hamster goes off the edge of the dune was faked for drama which also makes me think Clarksons close call was too, but its hard to tell when they cry wolf all the time.

He seems to claim otherwise

When Hammond was "stuck" on the cable car and they pulled back there must have been 20 people on the beach. It was obviously one of them

Lots of cocking about this week, which was mostly entertaining.

"The American" is just not working at all though.

Absolutely, doesn't help that the track is a bit crap as well.

The Stig worked better than you'd have thought, bit of a commentary from JC and some weird music, you don't actually need someone doing a Chris Evans in an American accent all the way round. Especially when it's clearly scripted.

Yes, "The American" character is just so predictable, and doesn't add to the humour. They seem to have reduced the amount he's saying now, so that's good at least.

I do think they've got over most of the problems that blighted the first five episodes, what we've seen from the Xmas Eve episode onwards is what I imagined the Grand Tour would be from the start.

So I'm far more positive about the show now

The American character isn't predictable, he's just a bit **** and unfunny.

That new episode was another enjoyable one and was the most Top Gear one they've done yet. They seem to have found their feet and are setting back in to their groove.

Agree with all that's been said here.
Feels like they are calming down a bit now after a bit of a over the top start, but was to be expected I guess

I do agree. for the love of god, get rid of that American Stig driver, the joke was old after the 1st episode (must admit I don't like the new track either, but hey)

I guess they probably realise the same, but they've probably already recorded the segments so what do you do? I know it's not the same but I recall Frank Skinner talking about Fantasy Football and a segment about Saint and Greavesy, it was awful, they realised it, but they'd recorded six of them so had to use them.

But he's not good, his commentary adds nothing, I guess they'll have a rethink for next season.

Good studio stuff this week, excellent Alfa piece. Barbados a bit hit and miss and not really related to driving at all. Still entertaining.

Yes I thought the reef bit was just okay, but very much one of those filler sections that occasionally come along. That happened on Top Gear too so no big problem (and it's not like it that awful Eco Cars thing from the early episodes - this was scripted but still amusing.)

I could have done without the "pretend the guys got beaten up by the audience" bit again, like they did with the opening episode in America. It wasn't funny then either, and the tent section would have been better off without it. The rest of the tent section was great though.
