THE DARK SIDE MAGAZINE has been publishing plagiarized reviews and other materials

Hopefully this is the right forum if not Mods plaese move.
It seem the UK magazine has been using dvd reviews+ Articles with out permission from many web sites.
How long this has been going on is unknown at the moment - if you have reviewed Horror dvds or know of web sites that review horror dvds please tell them as they may have had work used without permission.
See this forum for alot more details http://p210.ezboard.com/fthelatarnia...picID=82.topic

This is disgusting behaviour from a 'Once loved' magazine - i stopped buying after a certain person started working on it.

Jay Slater? If I'm right in thinking it's him why do so many horror fans *hate* him so much? I've heard him on a couple of commentaries IIRC and he seems alright.

Haven't bought The Dark Side for years tho, so don't really have any strong feelings about this news. Shame tho, because there isn't that many mags dedicated to the horror genre and this could finish them off.

I'm reinstating this thread and post now - I'm pretty happy for this thread to run having followed the events over the last few days. I imagine that it'd be useful for the sites that have been stolen from to have as many eyes looking over this as possible.

From what I've seen, this has been quite a shocking and blatant attempt to take credit for many people's work by a reasonably well respected genre magazine. Mr Bryce has allegedly stolen from the New York Times and the BBC too so the poo will be hitting the fan soon.

I am amazed that this has apparently been going on for years and yet none of these horror sites appear to have read 'The Dark Side', one of Britains few horror mag's and it's sold in the U.S.A. From the reports it appears large portions of some issues were taken off the internet. This may create a snobbery amongst reviewers 'worth ripping off in the Dark Side'. Let's hope they get a financial reward if not a very belated credit.

That thread is a real page-turner. Only browsed the magazine a few times (in Tower funnily enough!) but never liked it enough to buy. Surprised to see Marc Morris namechecked in there.

Glad to see the thread reopened
- Its amazing how they have got away with it for so long. Its not just horror sites that have been ripped but allegedly mainstream sites aswell eg Dvdfile, New york times etc.

Shake Head

Blimey I still get this, it usually has pretty good interviews with genre people. Are these ripped from somewhere too?

As from now I've stopped buying it

I can't believe how long it's been going on! Wonder what the NYT will do?

When i read Captains first post, i thought "i'm sure a bit of plagarism goes on in plenty of magazines" thinking it was just the odd line here & there, or perhaps one whole review. But having just finished reading the Latarnia thread, i have to say i'm absolutely gutted!
I hope all writers get the due credit for their work and financial compensation. Although i fear financial payouts may be the end for Darkside .

Wow I'm shocked at this story and have just read through the Latarnia thread on the link above. I'm so dissapointed as I used to be a real fan of this publication and even subscribed for years.

Be interesting to see what, if any, action the New York Times take.

Really disgraceful

I'm absolutely astonished at this.

The Dark Side has been one of my favourite mags since I was a boy. How could they be so dumb as to copy other peoples work word for word with no credit given to the original writer.

I'm pretty disgusted to be honest. Whether I'll be buying any more issues will rest on how this turns out

Slightly off topic, but is FEAR still going?

I used to work at the firm that did all the Repro (pre-printing work) for this. I've never really been into 'slasher' horror, but did find this mag to be an excellent read.

These were in the days before MAC's come along & it used to take me hours to do all the work on the cover & colour spreads.

No, Fear stopped printing quite a few years ago (93-ish?)

I've got every issue of Fear: top mag (RIP).

I've still got my Dark Side Horror Card lurking about my wallet (although I haven't read the magazine for many years)... the mag has come close to death many times and perhaps, just out of desperation/lack of funds they started lifting pieces wholesale just to get the issues out...

I've read more of that thread now: it seems a far more insidious thing than I thought above...

What about the Darkside books - video nasties etc. Anything dodgy going on with them.

Me too. Pretty shocking really isn't it? I'm amazed how widespread it is. It's not like it's just one or two articles here and there.

While do I hope the magazine survives, it's reputation is in tatters. Heads have to roll.

Anyone familiar with the other mag mentioned - DVD World? I can't say I've ever seen it on the stands.
