I felt this event was worthy of a proper thread!

Full fixtures here

Kicks off on Thursday at 4pm with Russia vs Saudi Arabia

Half an hour earlier if you want to watch Robbie Williams perform also!

Have to admit I'm looking forward to this one, the fixtures suit for the mostpart (the early weekday kick offs might be a pain) but overall the time zone works for me and liking the four matches on Saturday!

As for England, Southgate seems to have got the team playing to something like its strengths, and I have that pre-tournament optimism I like to have before we play a match. Although I can't realistically see us getting beyond the quarters, but after the previous few tournaments, I think that'd be deemed a decent performance.

Especially as it'll probably be Brazil or Germany in the quarters

I suppose you never really know who'll have a good tournament, could just as easily be someone else (but I doubt it). It's also not beyond the realms of possibility that we beat either side.

Hopefully we can just play as England, rather than spending all our prep time trying to come with up a system to thwart the attacking play of Albania, etc.

Not the best preparation for Spain, surely!

I've backed Brazil or Spain to win. Surely Germany can't win two on the bounce? Plus, their ludicrous decision to leave out Sane has left me wanting them to lose ASAP (and I usually like watching them).

Whilst I've not seen this Brazil team play, it seems that their new coach has got them playing as an effective unit, and look at that strikeforce: Neymar, Jesus, Coutinho, Firminho. I don't think the "South Americans struggling in Europe" hoodoo applies anymore, and some of their players have experience of playing in Russia & Ukraine.

Spain seem in decent nick and have so many skilful players.

I'm working during two of England's games which sucks and Saturday's France v Australia game is a 6am kick off for me. Just glad I'm not on the West Coast.

Anyone spot the little girl mascot stood in front of a Saudi player holding her hand up like in cuffs?!

So world rankings seem to be a joke, lowest side in it wins 5-0

It is for Russia, they are only ranked so low due to the fact they didn't have to qualify and have only played friendlies the last two years.
Whilst they are not top 10, they are certainly better than teams like Saudi Arabia, Iran and Panama.

I did think that, they're normally at such tournaments. Apparently the Russian press were giving them a right slagging before the tournament, I guess that happens in most places (I'm sure it did to France in 98)

Anyway 3 games today

Egypt v Uruguay 13:00
Morocco v Iran 16:00
Portugal v Spain 19:00

Some interesting games there, I'll certainly miss the Egypt one but aiming to be home for the 4pm kick off.

Not sure what sacking a manager 3 days before the first match will do for Spain, it could go either way.

Enjoyable enough game yesterday - but was there anything more vomit inducing than the sight of Infantino acting like the smug kingmaker cosily between Putin and Sheik whats-his-name, with the casual shrugs and smiles as the goals went in??

Shockingly low attendance at Uruguay Egypt game... From the mass of orange across the stands you'd think Holland were playing but it's just the colour of the seats.

No doubt the allocations were liberally spread around the Fifa 'family' and partners...
