I use syncback to pull all my data to a centralised location in backup mode. And then told onedrive that centralised location is its folder. So it will be syncing to that (which also serves as a local backup) but it itself will never be having anything removed from it.

Your existing externally drive could serve this purpose if it's always connected. My dad does this with his photo's

...Whats the error?
Don't forget there are share permissions, as well as file permissions... the share permissions take precedence. Have you also set 'Everyone' can read/write via the file permissions?

I set the permissions on the folder (and files) - what do you mean by share permissions?

I'll have to double check in a few mins but think the error was access denied..

Very confused.
Network settings sharing allow sharing on this connection

Sharing tab everyone read write

Password protection off (people without user account can access)

Error:
Destination Folder Access Denied

you need permission to perform this action

try again. /. Cancel

When you share a folder:

you have to set permissions:

This is different to the file permissions on that drive/folder.

Turns out I was being a muppet - must have been more tired than I thought

Was changing permissions on one folder yet testing on a different one...

Help, please.
- Internet connection coming and going, all the time, driving me mad!
No previous problems, no new software or hardware installed (except Windows updates).

Stuff:
Windows 10 PC, on home wi-fi network.
Wi-fi device is Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter, built-in to Asus motherboard.

Problem:
Despite a strong and rock-steady wi-fi signal, internet is continually coming and going, dropping every few minutes. When it drops, I right-click on the internet signal icon, and run the trouble-shooter, it resets something, and my internet is back again. For a few minutes.

Router is fine. Upgraded to latest firmware, and every other device in the house working fine, with no drops, including a Windows 10 laptop I'm running next to my PC.

I've google'd the problem, and followed every fix suggestion found.. network resets, DNS flushing, removing and re-installing the wi-fi device/driver.. still no joy.

Pulling my hair out now...

is it ok if connected with a network cable?

What channel / band are you running the wireless on? It could be something nearby is interfering with the signal. Try changing to 5g if everything supports it, if it's already on 5g, try changing to 2.4g see if that makes any difference.

I haven't tried it with a cable connection.

Running 5ghz, channel 36 seems to be selected at present, with -66dBm signal strength according to WiFi Analyzer. No other signals detected.

----

Everything has been running perfectly for several years now.

This problem started a month or so ago, without any obvious change in either the PC or my house!

When the internet does connect, it is super-fast. I just ran a speedtest and am getting 72 Mbps.
But within a few minutes, it drops completely. Whilst every other nearby device is fine.

Find it in device manager and make sure 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' is unticked.

could also be a driver update from windows itself. Try going to device manager > network adapters and double click on the wifi card. Then go to the driver tab and hit rollback driver if it's not greyed out.

Sometimes its just incompatible or some interference that you will never get to the bottom of.

I've solved in the past by buying a Ł10 USB WIFI dongle.

a couple of other things to try...

totally remove the driver and let windows re-install it

turn of any anti virus software

mobo firmware update if it's built in wireless

if you are running android - try https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...analyzer&hl=en and have a look, see if you can see anything.

try running a linux distro like ubuntu from a memory stick - at least that way you can see if it's hardward based, or software.

Anyone know how you can force Windows 10 to get the latest update(s) to avoid waiting for a staggered roll-out?

At work we use Forticlient and Windows Remote Desktop Connection to enable people to WFH but the versions we use only work if the two machines are running the same patch level. So I need to get my home PC up to the latest version

Two questions if I may, regarding security, the first of which, I'm guessing will be very open ended based upon what the company has running on its server.......

1. Logging into your msoft OneDrive cloud account via a web browser on a "works pc" which itself is connected to the outside world via the works server.
I'm assuming perhaps depending on your browser and software in place on the server, it's technically possible that data you are entering or looking at could be in some way monitored/scanned?
Would that be possible from a practical/normal standpoint in the 1st place, or even legal in the current data privacy world right now?
And would there be a preferred browser to be more secure to use on your pc?

2. Do we feel that your OneDrive space that you have in the cloud with Windows 10, and a nice amount of space there if you have msoft office, is in any way secure?
The only protection you have is your windows account name, which would often be a public thing, and your log into Windows password, which I'm guessing for most people is not some amazing long and complex series of random digits.
Plus of course, that aside, the scanning? Of your data by Microsoft automatically to check for any, let's say unsuitable content from being mass stored there which I'm sure they say is in place.
Hence me feeling any one drive data should be considered as moderately unsecure, and your only option would be some encrypted data file created by some program, and stored there, would be the only option if you wanted cloud data to be safe?

Your thoughts ?

Oh and if I can sneak in a 3rd one.
Google Drive and items within it. Such as Google Docs and Google Sheets.
I've set up google 2 factor authentication for my account.
So I guess the same about questions re that.
The data that's actually there (docs/spreadsheets) and if I log into my Google account from a works PC, can work in any way spy on me?

Well my advice would definitely be: don't transfer 'unsuitable' material to and from a onedrive account via a work PC.

OneDrive for consumers is not encrypted and cannot be considered secure. The business version is encrypted.
