I had something similar, found two issues, first was the Asus fan control util (conflict with the Windows patch for Spectre / Meltdown) and second was down to the GFX drivers that nvidia had released to fix the Spectre / Meltdown issues so had to go back to the November 2017 released version, it's been stable ever since the version released on 27th March (391.35).

The much delayed 1803 or "April update" is out now, my machine found it last night on a manual Windows Update check. Apparently an automatic push won't happen for another week.

Not noticed much difference so far, but visually I hate the new acrylic transparency! Not only do I not like the hover effect, but they've made massive bits of windows like the Settings app transparent so you can see through to whatever is behind. Awful! So much so that I've had to turn transparency off in settings.

One thing I have noticed is a stutter of the mouse pointer with disk activity, but I noticed that when I installed 1709 as well and it went away after a while. I think it might relate to some internal housekeeping my Crucial SSD (MX300) is doing after a lot of writes to the disk.

Installed the new update on my main PC last night, all went super smooth.
Was a bit stopped in my tracks with the 4 or 5 new pages of questions about privacy and features when it 1st restarted.
I can't recall exactly but one was, do you wish to to be able to use voice? If you say no, they you will miss out etc etc, so I clicked yes to that.

Another said are you ok to share location details to help with things that are local when you look for stuff. I also said yes to that one, as I have location on, on my mobile also.

Another said, do you want to sent info about every single website you look at to microsoft etc etc..... A BIG HARD NO to that one!

Also something about typing things in I said No to.....

Not sure which were the best choices as I was not expecting to have those things asked of me at the spur of the moment.

I think that's half the idea... In the end you just click next, next and next (or yes, yes and yes) just to get to your computer to do what you turned out on for in the first place... it's like a cut scene in a game you can't cancel...

Indeed.

Now I'm not paranoid, and I fully understand how much benefit you can get from a certain level of sharing information.
Location wise, that can help a lot with goods and services.
Likewise, if there is some general anonymous data about popular things visited for stats, then again I'm not going to start putting on a tin foil hat.

But when it comes to sending records of every web site I visit, then I'm drawing the line as that's too much detail, esp when I'm doing finances and entering passwords and stuff.

I'm guessing (please correct me if I'm wrong) as this is Windows 10 asking, even if I ticked yes to that, it would only apply to me using the EDGE browser?

Chrome (for example) would have nothing to do with these settings?

Probably worth installing shutup10 and going through its recommendations:

Would also recommend using WPD alongside SU10

Has the recent bigass Windows 10 updated screwed around with the taskbar transparency for anyone else? I've got the transparent taskbar option ticked, but ever since the update it's barely transparent:

I've never understood why there isn't a transparency slider in windows 10 tbh. Maybe I'm missing something but wouldn't that be a relatively simple thing to do?

Yeah you're right. I've been running it a week and hadn't even noticed they'd made it more opaque.

They ditched aero transparency in 8 upwards because it was bad for battery life or something.

Finally noticed a new feature: Windows key + . or ; opens a popup panel of emojis. This was in the previous release for some regions but didn't work when set to UK regional options.

Yeah it's like a frosted glass effect that's making it less transparent. I think it looks good on app windows but makes the taskbar look worse. I tried the transparency trick where you add a UseOLEDTaskbarTransparency entry into the registry but that now just makes the colour more transparent with the frosted glass type layer still intact. I'm sure I'll be used to it by the end of the week!

Damn John, what did it do? I've had so much bad luck with windows update fudging up my PC in previous versions that I'm still waiting for a big Windows 10 update to do the same to me! So far it's just little annoying stuff like updating my graphics card driver and introducing glitches with nvidia control panel and whatnot, and I think this latest upgrade might have actually made my computer a little bit faster, everything seems snappier.

My PC is ancient (bought in 2006) and all the windows updates have been fairly well received. The only issue is that every big update now uninstalls my graphics card driver and replaces it with a generic Microsoft one. No big deal if it supported the full range of resolutions my monitor supports.

But of googling and got the original one installed. Other then that no issues.

Yeah windows updating the graphics card driver is such a ballache imo. Are there really that many people out there who need an up-to-date graphics card driver but don't understand how to do it themselves?

I lose the correct? driver for my Soundblaster Z card, or at least the right configuration, as after both upgrades, I get 3-1 and not 5-1 sound and the wrong sound comes out the wrong speakers.... just sounds all odd.
Thankfully, just a re-install of the official drivers and a re-boot seems to put it back correct.

Depends on the definition of "need" but drivers can be a source of security vulnerabilities or stability issues, so that will be why Microsoft distribute them (as well as being a convenient source to have a non-generic driver at all.) I do agree they shouldn't revert manufacturer drivers just because Windows is upgraded through.

Considering how **** creative are at drivers though - it's a tough call as to who is to blame there. I mean Microsoft actually banned hardware audio acceleration they were so fed up of getting blamed for shoddy audio drivers.

My SB-Z largely survived the upgrade. The encoder was disabled but that was it.

I hope the driver itself hasn't updated because Creative broke the 3.5mm headphone port support in the driver a year ago and haven't seen fit to fix it yet!

1803 (Spring Update) is completely busted on my rig, even with a clean install after a format. UWP apps refuses to work right even the calculator, start menu, notifications will sometimes not open. The Store is flicking refreshing mess and Edge crashes.

That actually sounds like a normal Windows 10 installation. You sound surprised?

There was an issue in earlier versions of 10 where Metro didn't work because the included Nvidia driver was crap. If you have an Nvidia card - make sure to install the drivers from Nvidia.

Did that via GF Experince on fresh install. Did roll back to Fall Update but then my Dell Visor won't work so had to roll forward again. What's really stupid is the Insider Build a few weeks before this rolled out on the main channel worked fine for me.
