They're playing Uruguay next and that team (or at least one of them ) has more teeth than Egypt or Saudi Arabia.

But Uruguay got a worse result against a poorer Egypt team than the one that played yesterday.

Todays games, with special guest Sepp Blatter (who I'd have thought would be banned from attending, but what do I know?)

1pm Portugal v Morocco
4pm Uruguay v Saudi Arabia
7pm Iran v Spain

I'm struggling with the maths of the groups at this stage, but Russia seem all but mathematically through, it'd need a goal swing of about 10 to knock them out.

Iran could book their place with an unlikely victory today, but I'd guess it'll be Spain and Portugal seeing how many goals they can rack up to win the group.

For those interested in the criteria for splitting teams in the event of a tie

The ranking of each team in each group shall be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their
rankings shall be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the
teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams
concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams
concerned;
g) greater number of points obtained in the fair play conduct of the teams
based on yellow and red cards received in all group matches as follows:
– yellow card: minus 1 point
– indirect red card: minus 3 points
(as a result of a second yellow card)
– direct red card: minus 4 points
– yellow card and direct red card: minus 5 points
Only one of the above deductions shall be applied to a player in a single
match;
h) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

Yes, Russia are all but through, and Egypt are all but out.

I'd say he's had his goals quota. I'll go for none!

The difference between the better teams and the so called minnows seems to be the ability to take chances.
Morocco looked the better team for long periods of the game, but Portugal have Ronaldo.

Looks like Iran have got a subtle game plan vs Spain. Kick them as hard as possible.

Is it a bad plan? The refs don't seem to be very card happy as they have done in previous world cups. I think we've had one red card (?) and that was for a blatant handball on the goal line, the Panama game was the exception and the yellows were flying. But you might as well until the ref starts throwing cards out

Russia and Uruguay get to fight it out for top spot, Saudi seemed to be fairly resigned to it.

Wasn’t there a new football rule to stop players crowding round and intimidating the ref? If rugby players got up in the ref’s face like these miscreants, they’d be sin-binned...

And with all the diving, exaggerated injuries, and general fanny-behaviour, I’m reminded why I loathe top-tier football....

Did you see the incident in the Portugal vs Morocco match? One of the Moroccans gave Pepe the lightest of pats on his shoulder and the latter fell over screaming as if he'd been electrocuted. These guys are supposed to be well trained athletes and yet act as though they are made of terra-cotta.

It is embarrassing isn’t it. I have no idea why fifa don’t introduce big retrospective bans. That’d stop it.

Yes, I saw the PePe back-slap - and these are the fannies that are paid millions.. that young boys idolise.. that people have the temerity to refer to as “athletes”.

Yes, there should be some retrospective punishment. But when the whole culture of football is engrained with this, who is going to introduce this, or administer it?

Even if you love football, you must admit it is bizarre that behaviour like this, effectively cheating by pretending you’re a featherweight pansy, is not just allowed, but frequently rewarded, and accepted. And society deems these boys to be the most valuable members of society in terms of renumeration. Not doctors, nurses, fire-fighters, charity workers, armed forces, labourers, council workers, engineers, mechanics, police....
No, it’s these football fannies that we deem should be the rich millionaires.

We've got VAR, if you see a player rolling on the floor like he's been shot, it's fairly obvious you must have missed a serious incident. So go and look on the screen, if he's play acting then you send him off, if he's really been hit badly, you send the other guy off.

It'd stop it overnight.

The stupid thing is, if the ref had falled for the ruse then surely the VAR team would have told him he'd made a serious error, then what?

No different to movie and music stars. They generate huge revenue and therefore are going to take a big share. That said, I do agree that the play acting and other forms of active cheating are revolting. The interest of the World Cup is now more in the variety of cheating methods than the game.

Spain lucky to be getting away with a win here. Iran really pushed them hard after they scored. Shame they didn’t have the confidence to attack from the outset.

Still think VAR is a complete waste of time and should be ditched.
