No - I tried to get in touch with a dozen or so bloggers to review it and even though most had a note on their site saying they were looking for submissions, most said they didn't have the time. I get to do one Q & A, but that's it. I suppose knowing a "tastemaker" would be useful!

Totally agree with you about being good is only half the battle. There's probably thousands of band out here who are at the same level, but it's the one or two who get lucky and are noticed by some A & R guy by accident who will make it. That's life though.

There doesn't seem to be any right way of doing it, I guess it's down to luck. If making money is your aim their seems to be strategies for that. Principally churn out lots of romance books it seems.

I agreed to read one of my wife's favourite romance books in return for her reading my favourite book "How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the FA Cup."

It was bloody awful, plot holes, poor dialogue, exactly why you'd fall in love with a man tied to a chair, badly beaten who you couldn't speak to, etc. She chose that one for me, as it had some subplot about Irish independence which also made little sense and I pointed out that at no point was it mentioned the guy was Irish.

Turns out that lady has published over 40 books on Kindle and seems to make an alright income out of looking after her kids and getting a couple of thousand people to buy 4 romance books a year. She probably makes more money that she would writing for mills and boon.

So I think it depends, do you want to publish a great idea that is well executed and something you can be proud of. Or you could put your talent to something that will probably sell a bit, but you do under a pseudonym and never tell your friends about.

Take Kindle Unlimited, I took a look at it, checked if a few authors I liked were on it (they weren;t) and decided it wasn;t for me. My wife saw it and saw 20,000 romance books to read.

Yep, it's a numbers game (esp in Romance) and primarily luck driven.

Interesting. I guess some people look at the price drops and select things or new people might just browse through the free ones.

I suppose with Amazon's millions of customers, you're always going to get a few who stumble across your book randomly and download it. Naively, I thought I'd sell at least a couple a week in this way! How wrong I was.

Finally got my wife's book on there, rather weirdly we stuck it on there and told nobody about it as we were on holiday and wanted to do a little facebook launch on one day. 2 people had read it in America on Unlimited. If the 63 people who have congratulated her actually buy one, we'll be laughing.

I thought like that when I developed my first mobile app for iOS. Never even thought about "how will people even find my app". Gave up after that as I don't have thousands to spend on marketing :-(

Yep, just getting people to know you exist at all is near-impossible. Game devs are having a similar issue on Steam at the moment.
I'm currently writing a blog entry on luck, which will hopefully gain me enough press from indignant successful people to go viral and sell loads of copies...

If you're interested in learning more about Amazon ads, this free course might help.

My wife sold a copy of her book completely randomly, to someone who wanted to give it as a gift to someone with the same name as her.
