The thing is, it's not like Lucas hasn't made his mark on movie history, having created some American classics: THX 1138, American Graffiti and then, of course, the original Star Wars flick.

But the rise of his empire happened just as Star Wars completely burned him out, and that was the death of Lucas the filmmaker. Shame.

Somewhere round the mid 80's he definatley became more intrested in the tech side of film making rather good scripts and directing.

Oh and Devin from Chud found out just when Lucas is going to make those 'Art' films he keeps talking about. Basically never. I'm actually impressed that someone finally asked him just why he hasn't made any of them yet, seeing as he talks about them so much.

Surely he would be better off leaving SW behind and create something new.

Actually - Lucas said they had found a black director to helm Red Tails - it was in the Times piece.

He's been talking about Red Tails for years, decades even.

Yeah, I'm not bothered about this at all. I love all 6 movies, but this is just meh. It might be because the animation style is offputting or something.

They should get rid of the 'dark' angle, drop William's annoying theme (the one in the trailer) and back to the original style, 3D animation or not.

It's being released on Blu-ray straight away, so you only need to buy it once.

You have a point, but at the end of the day Lucas has been talking up these 'art' films for YEARS. But he always find something else to do first. It's about time someone actually asked him why he hasn't done it yet. And his answer is typical Lucas.

I will bet the House I'm living in now that Lucas will NEVER make those films.

So what if he never makes them? He has already made his mark on film, why not just sit back and watch the cash role in while others now do the TV and live action show.

Who cares? Why bully the man about it. I can't stand so called fans who behave like this.

I think there may be a point about the way he's inconsistent, but people are really just asking him to wind him up - they don't actually want to see any art films that he produces. It's a kind of elitism that assumes that a)blockbusters can't be good and b)anything arty or independent is good. Of course the truth is in the middle - some art films are as bad as the worst blockbusters and some of the best blockbusters are as good as any art film.

Actually I disagree. Lucas has been talking about it since before 'The Phantom Menace' was even released. He would keep bringing up that as soon as he was done he would start making his art films again because it's something he's more interested in. People aren't asking him about it mockingly, I would genuinely like to see what he comes up with. This isn't interviewers having a laugh, this is Lucas who likes to bring it up whenever he can. All Devin did was simply ask him why he hasn't done it yet. It's not an outrageous question. But the problem is that more time goes on the more he finds a reason not to do it but keeps saying that he will.

The same week that Devin asked that question, Lucas was talking them up again. Only this time he might make them and never release them. If he has no intention of doing it then he should just say so, why keep stringing it out? But that's Lucas, he would never admit that he's wrong.

Personally I think he wants to be remembered for something other than 'Star Wars'. He's forever going to be that guy, and given the type of film maker he started out as I imagine it was the last thing he wanted to be.
