Scottish Football Season

New season approaching (or for some clubs it's already kicked off!) and new thread.

Hearts and Aberdeen have already played in their first leg Europa League qualifiers, coming out with narrow wins, hopefully they will progress to the next round.

Celtic kick off their Champions league qualifier in around 15 days with Flora Tallinn looking like their opponents in that round. Brendan Rodgers has started to get busy with signings and selling/releasing players from a bloated squad. Dembele looks a good prospect, another striker and decent centre back is hopefully next.

League cup kicks off early this year with group stages for the team (teams in European competition and from top 6 of SPFL not involved yet at this stage I think).

Predictions for this season:

SPFL Champions: Celtic
Scottish Cup: Celtic
League Cup: Celtic
Relegated: Hamilton
Promoted Hibs

I'll likely have egg on my face for that treble prediction

Still find it strange that the european campaign has started so early for Aberdeen/Hearts, as most teams haven't even played pre-season friendlies yet.

We have assembled a good squad, couple of big players that I'd not have thought possible for us to get hold of and we have managed to clear out a bit of deadwood.

Rodgers will be a big draw for players and Dembele could be a great player for Celtic.

Predictions -
SPFL winner - Rangers (heart over head - Celtic should win the league this year)
League Cup - Rangers
Scottish Cup - Celtic
Relegated - Partick Thistle
Promoted - Hibs (has to be 3rd time lucky surely).
Think The Rangers can hope for 3rd or 4th at best in the new season.

Celtic followed by Hearts and Sevco third.

Celtic's pre season games include Leicester , Inter Milan, Barcelona and Wolfsburg. While Sevco take on the might of Charleston Battery

I'd be surprised if Aberdeen didn't finish above Hearts.

I think it will be tight for 2nd with Hearts edging it but yes wouldn't be surprised either way.

Jesus Christ, that's setting the bar a bit low, losing to a team from Gibralter.

Newco will take a lot of heart from that.

From the BBC -
Humbled by a side of part-timers from Gibraltar, a country with a population half the size of Celtic Park. The Brendan Rodgers era begins in ignominious fashion with arguably the worst result in the club's history.

I'm sure Celtic will turn it around but maybe this result will take away a wee bit of confidence from Celtic fans that they would walk the league and that Rodgers would be the new messiah.

Wonder if the press will still be trying to convince us that someone was willing to pay £1.5m for Ambrose. I'd expect Celtic to win by 4 or 5 at home but as a one off result it's hilarious for anyone who isn't a Celtic fan.

Barton has been tweeting again, I can see him getting lumps kicked out him in the first OF game.

Woeful display, still we could have easily won that game by 3 goals.

Griffiths out wide is a head scratcher, playing the striker who got 40 goals last seasons out wide??

Let's hope a few more centre back's are signed in this window.

The new league campaign is just over a week away and the Daily Record has asked a number of folk to come up with their OF 11. To say Joe Miller is deluded is an understatement.

KEITH JACKSON (4-4-2)
Craig Gordon; James Tavernier, Kolo Toure, Erik Sviatchenko, Lee Wallace; Patrick Roberts, Joey Barton, Scott Brown, Niko Kranjcar; Leigh Griffiths, Martyn Waghorn.

SCOTT McDERMOTT (4-2-3-1)
Craig Gordon; James Tavernier, Eric Sviatchenko, Jozo Simunovic, Lee Wallace; Joey Barton, Andy Halliday; Martyn Waghorn, Barrie McKay, Patrick Roberts; Leigh Griffiths.

ANTHONY HAGGERTY (4-4-2)
Craig Gordon; Kieran Tierney, Kolo Toure, Eric Sviatchenko, James Tavernier; Barrie McKay, Joey Barton, Niko Kranjcar, Scott Allan, Leigh Griffiths, Patrick Roberts.

GORDON PARKS (4-4-2)
Craig Gordon; James Tavernier, Kolo Toure, Erik Sviatchenko, Kieran Tierney; Patrick Roberts, Joey Barton, Barrie McKay, Niko Kranjcar; Leigh Griffiths, Martyn Waghorn.

JOE MILLER (4-4-2)
Craig Gordon; Kieran Tierney, Jozo Simunovic, Kolo Toure, Eric Sviatchenko; Callum McGregor, Stuart Armstrong, Scott Brown, Patrick Roberts; Leigh Griffiths, Moussa Dembele.

GORDON DALZIEL (4-4-2)
Craig Gordon; James Tavernier, Erik Sviatchenko, Kolo Toure, Lee Wallace; Martyn Waghorn, Jordan Rossiter, Joey Barton, Kieran Tierney; Leigh Griffiths, Moussa Dembele.

My pick 4-3-3
Foderingham/Gordon - both have good points and bad point not sure
Tavernier, Toure, Sviatchenko, Wallace, Barton, McKay, Kranjcar, Robert, Griffiths, Waghorn

Put it this way apart from maybe the two new signings by Sevco , Kranjcar and Barton. None of the others would strengthen what we have.

You are Joe Miller and I claim £10.
After the roasting that Barry McKay gave your guys last season, you wouldn't pick him? He is on course for far bigger things than Scottish football.

Typical over the top reaction , One Flukey goal and performances against the likes of East Stirling and Annan and he's the next Messi. Wait a year and see how he performs against decent opponents week in week out before you get to excited about the new messiah.

A 1 out of a 100 shot or similar I think your keeper said, then McKay did the same the following game. He's not the new messiah (or a very naughty boy) but he's the most talented Scottish player I've seen at the club for several years and he didn't just perform against Annan/East Stirling, he had goals and assists against the top teams in the league.

Good to see that we have been dismissed already though, means we might well get a few repeats of the semi final and more egg on the faces of the Suttons and Hartsons.

Well going by the squads you have had last four years it wouldn't be hard. As I said Let's see how he does against the big boys week in week out or he may become another King Billy. What happened to him.

Billy King? He joined half way through the season on loan and played a handful of games. He went back to Hearts and I think he is away to Inverness or somewhere now.

Last season we had a good first team but not enough strength in depth in our squad hence why guys like Law, King, Shiels and Clark got game time. This year we've got rid of a lot of deadwood and added far better players in their place so their is genuine competition for places so if folk don't perform then they will be out the following game. Also means we have proper cover for injuries and suspensions as losing Waghorn meant it took longer to wrap up the league than it should have.

I'm sure the Saville 11 will struggle this season, they have put all their eggs in 1 basket by getting Brenda and will have either sell or pay half their squad to be able to strengthen their squad ,and if they don't qualify for the champion league they will be in trouble ,Penn State have no money

.
That's exactly my point , there was a lot of furore over him when he scored the winner against Falkirk on his debut and look where he is now. Though a lot of it was due to his name.
