I thought Green Book was very good tough to pick one from that, A Star is born & B Rhapsody.

Enjoyed The Favourite, all the leads were great but I left feeling a bit disappointed, I'm surprised it got so many nominations.

as for Roma... just a snooze fest.

Went to a screening of Can you ever forgive me? on Sunday which was fantastic if that had been in best picture easy choice for me.

The Favourite is a beautifully crafted, beautifully acted, well written, dark, twisted, period dramady that's significantly better film than bland paint-by-numbers populist "entertainment" films like Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born, that's probably why it got so many nominations.

Black Panther?!!

It's not even the best superhero film of the year, never mind Best Picture.

Black Panther being an Oscar-nominated Best Picture just sums up everything that's wrong with the Oscars & is truly embarrassing. Clearly picked for one reason only which has nothing to do with film-making. If it wasn't for Venom coming out last year, Black Panther was the worst superhero-related movie of 2018 IMO....

IMO it was the best super hero related movie IMO. How anyone could put it above the pile of poo that was Aquaman is beyond me.
Having said that I don't think it is worthy of an Oscar nomination, but I feel the same about Roma.

It'll clean up at the Kermode awards then.

Feels like the dullest selection of nominees for years. The only one there I'd really like to see win is Sam Elliott, & I haven't even seen A Star is Born.

Nice to see they've doubled down on the usual 'put in one popular but not remotely awards worthy film' in the best picture category with Black Panther & Bohemian Rhapsody.

Reading every Aquaman comic in the last 25+ years probably makes me a little biased but it did the "superhero" elements much better than BP did.

Hopefully the Oscars will get one thing right & award Into the Spider-verse with a statue.

For live-action, Infinity War should have been the Super-hero movie to get a best-picture nod. It's massively more entertaining & technically, vastly superior to BP in all departments...

Spider-man into the spider verse should have been the super hero film with the best picture nod. But it's a cartoon so it has to know its place.

I can understand BP getting a nomination for costume design but all the rest are amusing. I thought the film was ok but to get multiple oscar nominations.

Also SOLO for Best visual effects

I made this post a while back on another board, but a quick tweak makes it just as relevant in this thread as well:

Comic Book Fanboy: "The oscars are irrelevant, they NEVER nominate comic book movies for best picture."

Oscars: "Black Panther for Best Picture"

Comic Book Fanboy: "They nominated the WRONG comic book film!"

God I hope it wins just to see the internet meltdown. I don't think it will, I think it's just a token nomination in a category that was expanded a few years back precisely so they could lob in a few token nominations to shut idiots on the internet up, but god I hope it wins!

You wanna know why Black Panther was nominated over every other superhero film last year? Because the Oscars has been hemorrhaging viewers for years now and they need to dump a few more populist nominations in there to look more accessible to the american mainstream, and guess what superhero film was the biggest seller of 2018. Here's a clue: It's not ******* Aquaman! Not even CLOSE.

You wanna know why Infinity War was overlooked? Because you need to go into it as a comic book film fan to get the most out of it. It's the culmination of god knows how many superhero films, and it doesn't even have an ending! It's TO BE CONTINUED... How the hell can a film like that even remotely play well with the Academy? You're talking about a mostly older demographic who have probably never seen a comic book movie in their life having to watch god knows how many films as it is, having to watch and assess Infinity War? How the hell do you convince them to watch that? I'm willing to bet that IF the Academy wanted to nominate Infinity, they'll wait for the dtory to actually conclude (which will be Endgame) and nominate that film like they did with Lord of the Rings.

Black Panther was the obvious choice, it's its own closed story, it was well reviewed by US critics and it was well received by US audiences, plus it sold around 6million more tickets than any other film this year at the US box office.

Very white comic book fanboys are quick to scream out "they're pandering to race!" yet none of these very white comic book fanboys seem to grasp that maybe, just maybe, this film is more important to african american audiences and means a little more than your typical comic book film to them, and perhaps because african americans are such a huge portion of the US populace that perhaps it's not the end of the world that the Oscars have decided to nominate a film that's special to mainstream african american viewers rather than mainstream white audiences for once? I dunno, maybe that's something to think about anyway.

Oh and also: There have been far, faaaaaar, worse films than Black Panther to be nominated for Best Picture. **** me, Crash won the damn award once!

Just had an email from Odeon giving me a chance to guess the best picture and get a chance to win a free limitless pass, the question is now what should I guess?

I've seen all the films beginning with B and will watch The Favourite soon, but not so sure about Roma, not hearing great reports back. My fave so far is Green Book, but as its not been released over here properly yet, not heard the buzz

I thought Green Book was excellent but most of the buzz seems to be around Roma & The Favourite.

Have not seen it yet (well get BD sometime) but I have heard a lot of praise for Adam Driver's acting in Blakklansman. Seeing that he is nom for BSA, might win it.

Like the film itself, his acting is fine but nothing special.
