Arrow The Sonos discussion thread...

Thinking of getting a Sonos system for my flat, is the sound quality good? I like the idea of wireless, are there any other options for up to £500. Also would it be worth upgrading to spotify premium for better sound quality? Cheers

I've got a Sonos system as well and the Play 5 in particular is very good, although the Play 3 is good for its size as well. There are lots of other alternatives, but nothing comes close to Sonos if you'll be using it as a system.

My Sonos is one of the best purchases I've made.

Messed around with other wireless solutions, but this is by far the best.

One note of caution, check your router against the Wall of Shame on the Sonos site. Some routers have problems.

Agree with above the Sonos system is excellent - robust and reliable -and sounds good to.

The latest software release which now allows you to play your music library directly from your ipad adds another level of convenience as you no longer have to switch on your PC or laptop to provide your sonos with access to your music library.

Ordered a Play 3, primarily to use with Spotify - I want to get more value from the premium account. Any gotchas I should know?

Am I right in assuming Sonos are used for streaming music around the house rather than (say) as a sound system for a home cinema system?

The only gotcha that "got" me was the issue with my old router.

Replaced router, everything fine.

My elderly unbranded ebuyer router works fine with it - the first connection of the play3 to the bridge took ages though!

The main annoyance so far, after seeing Slade night on BBC4, is the lack of any Slade on spotify! There is a free 6months of napster offer but you do have to set up the payment details in advance, must remember to cancel it.

Basically though, the killer feature is being able to control it from a phone or tablet. My wife loves it. I'm now thinking of getting a connect to link up to the "proper" sound system, but find it a bit annoying that the connect costs more than what is effectively the same thing with an amp and speakers built in

Just got a Sonos Play 5 and Play Bar (after selling two Squeezebox Touches for just over £200 each on Ebay - paid £150 each for them!)

Hadn't realised one needed to be wired to the router so then had to pop out for a bridge as well! Doh!

Not got the Playbar set up yet but just trying to get the Play 5 set up. What's the best way to get it accessing my iTunes? Does it just need the Sonos software installing on a PC with iTunes on? And does it then pick up any changes, etc to the iTunes DB? And playlists?

I have a Spotify sub as well so I'll be using Spotify, my iTunes music and radio stations.

Are there any media server apps that are worth looking at (ie Plex, etc type things?) Logitech Media Server was actually pretty good as that, it was just the clunkiness of switching between local and web that was a pain (and not wife friendly!)

Not sure about the 5, but the 3 will just stream music from any SMB mountable drive

I don't want to connect anything to it physically. I've got my iTunes on WHS and I was hoping it would pick up all the music and the playlists. I've added the 'My Music' to the library but it doesn't seem to have picked up the playlists from iTunes.

I thought it would from this;

I agree with that. After all my Apple gear, my Sonos speakers are the best technology I've ever invested in. The sound quality is outstanding and I never have a problem with the setup. I love having the ability to add more speakers to my network whenever I want. I have them in almost every room now.

The Play 3 is fine in smaller rooms (I use these in the kitchen and a pair of them in my home office) but the Play 5 is vastly superior in larger rooms - living room and bed rooms in my home.

If you have a Spotify £9.99 subscription you can play all the music on there throughout your home in great quality. I wish they'd also add support for Google Play Music but not much sign Google is interested in opening it up, or even better iTunes Match.

Actually, it took me a while to set it up initially! I was trying on my Win 8 laptop (wirelessly) and it just wouldn't connect to the Play5 or the bridge (which I bought a day later). It seems to prefer a wired connection as I could connect it fine using the Sonos software on my desktop and home server. The home server is on 24/7 anyway so that's the preferred installation, so it's fine having it on that.

Anybody picking up a Play:1?

Apparently, it's being sold with a free wireless bridge (about a €50 saving).

Well worth it as an introduction to Sonos.

I really fancy a couple as soon as they're available here.
