Pokemon Go

Wasn't sure whether to put this here on in the mobile forum

I "acquired" this yesterday and spent the morning walking round the neighbourhood looked for pokemon. It's fun, but at the same time, I think it's limited and there are a few niggles I didn't like. It shows you what Pokemon are in the area, but it doesn't route you to them for example and it's mostly the same pokemon that appear in the area.

Besides the gyms (which you have to be level 5 to go to) there doesn't seem to be any battling with your pokemon

Not had a problem with pokemon balls yet, I've caught about 10 and my best one so far is Eevee.

I think the best thing about it is however, that it encourages you to walk a lot

Is anybody else playing this yet?

I assume the "acquired" part means it isn't available yet. I fancy giving it a go but is it a pay as you go sort of thing?

Actually, I downloaded it from the app store to my iphone...just had to workaround to say I was in the states.

It is pay as you go, but it's a lot more forgiving than most, and rewards putting time into it, walking around, going to pokestops etc...you can however pay to get the stuff you get from pokestops for free...i guess it all depends on how much you're willing to invest time wise

There are 4 Pokestops near me. One is at the end of the pier (I live in a small coastal town). The only problem is that it's at the very very end where there is a small lighthouse, this end of the pier is closed off with a locked gate. The gate has spikes surrounding it to prevent people climbing over and getting access.

Now everyone does anyway. People climb over to fish off the end of the pier. But it is considered unsafe.

Game wise this is obviously all automated. Pokestops are automatically chosen via local landmarks. But I'm wondering how they are going to deal with issues like this.

I don't live in the most densely populated suburb so there's nothing really nearby. I get the odd Pidgey and Rattata but the closest Pokestops and Gyms are a bit of a trek.

I thought this was free with in-app purchases?

So far I have two Pokemon caught in my house. Haven't checked it outside yet, but may use it to get out and about at lunch

Have you tried? the few pokestops I've looked at, I didn't have to be right on top of it, just within about 50 metres

Is there an official launch date for the UK yet? I read it should've been released at the weekend but server issues in the US and Oz were causing delays or something?

They have taken portal locations from Ingress to use in PokemonGo. I'm waiting for the official release before i give it a go out of curiosity.

For those looking for places rich in pokemon places, then check out the ingress intel map for your area. You will need to zoom right in and pan around a little in rural areas. Check for locations such as churches, information signs & statues/monuments. http://ingress.com/intel

If you find an unsafe portal in Ingress, it can be reported. Portal submissions have been "on hold" for a long time now, but they are looking into a new submission method which might also give more pokemon places. But that'll probably be in 5yrs knowing how slow Niantic are

If you want to play pokemon and are waiting for it to come out officially then give Ingress a try.

That link doesn't work. Just wants me to log in.

Seems a bit of an error having some people able to play before it's actual release, as the gyms will already have been claimed and high level pokemon stationed there.

You'll need an ingress account to use the ingress map

I must admit, the one gym I've been to was way too high level wise and had been claimed, and I don't exactly live in a metropolis, I'm level 6 but they were level 11-12. I may have to find a friendly gym and train my pokemon up a bit

You pick your side at level 5 right?
Can you tell what side your local gyms already are before that point?

Got curious & d/loaded it this morning & getting funny stares from work colleagues as I wander around our large office capturing virtual pokemons & already got a telling off from my boss ... Oops!

Might venture out into the streets of Glasgow at lunchtime & see how long it takes me to get mugged...
