First American Gods, now Good Omens?!

It looks as if Neil Gaiman has not only confirmed American Gods but also that the awesome Good Omens is being adapted for TV by Ex-Python Terry Jones; which is strange as there is quite a bit of history between Good Omens and other Python Terry Gilliam.

I'm not sure if Jones' adaption will be as dark as what Gilliam's would have been, but I personally am really excited for this.

More excited about this than American Gods - I thought American Gods was his weakest book.

He's also in talks with various networks about a Sandman TV show.

I thought Good Omens was a fairly poor and ultimately uninteresting book personally, I remember really struggling to get through it. Also quite heavily ripped-off by Kevin Smith in Dogma.

... And 8 years later...

It's out today on Amazon Prime! All 6 episodes released together.

I read the book again last weekend to prepare. Mainly because I couldn't remember much from the actual plot. It's quite a short book, I read it in a few hours. No surprise it's only 6 episodes.

Not sure how Michael McKean will do as Shadwell, he seems a bit miscast as an English Northerner/Scott (even given his David St Hubbins). The woman cast as Anathema looks far too glamorous/pretty too. Jack Whitehall as Newt is a left-field choice, though does have the right look.

I got halfway through the 2nd season of American Gods and just seemed to lose interest.

I did enjoy the book of American Gods, but the TV series, while having excellent casting choices, looked remarkably cheap. I sat through just the first episode.

Good Omens was a great book, the radio play did nothing for me, so it will be interesting to see how this show plays.

I've been surprised by the positivity for this. I know nothing about the book but the trailer looked pretty dreadful, with Tenant just being Tenant (i.e. Doctor Who but with a pinch of his character from the Fright Night remake) and it all looked a bit cheap.

I'm halfway through the series but have given up. I'm sure my dislike for Pratchett and Gaiman's work is a factor, but this is terrible. A bizarre jumbled plot with nonsense writing, too many characters and weird asides and some of the worst special effects I've seen in recent memory.

On the plus side, the cast are good but it's not like they have much to do and several of them are over acting.

It was decent but not particularly great. Some standout moments but also some poor effects.

And I'm a huge Pratchett fan.

Big fan of Pratchett in my youth & I thoroughly enjoyed this. Yes, it's a bit cheap & cheerful at times & some of the acting is terrible (the children & supporting angels in particular), but the tone felt like it captured what Pratchett & Gaiman were going for in the book & Tennant & Sheen were both excellent. Their scenes together were the highlights of the series.

The main downside for me was given the sprawling nature of the thing, a lot of decent actors were given very little to do. Daniel Mays & Nick Offerman were wasted, & I'm not even sure why David Morrissey turned up for his single scene.

Overall though, a big thumbs up from me.
