I enjoyed Danny Baker's tweet, which was along the lines of: If a striker fires a 60mph ball at you from three yards, and you can deliberately move your hand to stop the ball, you should be a world-class goalkeeper, not a defender!

How was that relevant to the United match?

I assumed he was talking about the "handball" v PSG.

It was further than 3 yards, wasn't it?

The thing is, the defender was looking over his shoulder when the ball was hit. He jumped to block it and it hit his arm...therefore it can easily be seen as a penalty. I know it looks very harsh and, without the VAR system it most probably wouldn't be given...but VAR was available, it was seen as a penalty and United fully deserved the victory 'cos we ******* them 3-1 on their own ground!

VAR is coming to the PL next season, you just wait, this'll be happening all the time!

But the weird thing is ... there were a few ex-refs saying it wouldn't be given in the PL even with VAR.

There was a similar comment ( from ex refs ) regarding the Kane penalty against Arsenal; according to UEFA and FIFA rules it wasn't a penalty as he was offside but apparently the FA have a different rule which penalises a foul on offside player before penalising the player for being offside

That's rubbish. if he's offside first, there isn't any foul. It might be different if he gets a forearm smash to the head.
Regarding handball, aren't the rules changing next year anyway?

I know the Kane thing is a rubbish rule but it is true; you are not deemed to be offside until you have made a movement towards the ball and if you are fouled whilst 'offside' but before making the move then you get a free kick or penalty.

AFAIK from a defensive perspective the rule is only changing in terms of this new 'body silhouette' rule used to determine if the arm is in an unnatural position and it still needs to be deemed as international. From an attacking perspective, you will no longer be able to score via your hand regardless of whether you meant it or not.

Sometimes they're given, sometimes they're not. With a good look at VAR, I suppose its more likely. Certainly someone told the ref to look at it, so I guess a couple of people thought it was.

You're gonna see various decisions like this with VAR, marginal decisions that can be viewed and rewound. I'd have thought without VAR the ref wouldn't

1. Have seen it clear enough
2. Had time to make up his mind

A great point and one which a lot of people seem to be brushing over - the referee was told to look at it.

Regardless of the opinion of ex-pros and referees post match, three people reviewed it and decided there was enough to instruct the referee to review it.

Yes if it had been given against Utd I would be fuming, but what’s the point of arguing the toss?

As has been said above, was it a penalty? Yes because the ref awarded it.

Where have these three people come from?

In the CL there is ONE VAR who has an assistant, who liaises between the VAR and the ref ( as the VAR has to be cut off from any stadium noise ) but has no say on the incident.

People also seem to be forgetting the general point of punditry is to make some talking points, had the penalty not bee given you could churn out some more hackneyed phrases...

1. I've seen them given Gary
2. In my day that was ball to hand all day long, but nowadays...
3. You can't have your hands out in the area, thats defending 101

More importantly, we're losing against Arsenal...and not playing well!

Finally beaten in a one leg tie. Disappointing obviously but especially against a pretty poor Arsenal team...we just looked tired and jaded for some reason. Ultimately done by a bad mistake from De Gea and a VERY soft penalty (...but I s'pose we can't complain about that)

Next up Wolves, hopefully we can get back to winning ways.

It's unrealistic to win every game, no matter what MICON thinks. I guess they were a sterner test and you had a tough game midweek.

It's just a pity we lost a six-pointer.

However, had anyone said, back in December, we would have a chance to go joint third by mid-March, I'd have told them to get their head checked.

Still in the hunt for a top 4 finish, still only 3 points of 3rd...gonna be hard now though with City and Chelsea still to play.

Seems Coutinho wants to come to United, could be a good buy but I think we need to get rid of Sanchez first. Nice to see top players actually wanting to come to United again

I've watched this multiple times now: spending in football over the last 28 years. Pick a team and watch them go up and down, and then watch the entire world get clobbered by the money thrown at City.

City are bent as **** and the fact that they are still yet to be punished in any significant way by either the FA or UEFA (or when they have been they can just bribe their way out of it) proves those organisations are corrupt as well.

Etihad Airways paid a less than £8M as part of their supposed £65M sponsorship of the club - the rest came from ADUG. And that's just one example.
