I signed up for Spotify again, thought it might be nice to see how it's improved in Sonos since they upgraded the implementation, but still disappointed with it.

It now has moods, genres, etc plus the artist radio (starting a radio from any artist) is good, but it still doesn't list artists or albums in "My Music", just playlists, which is useful, and songs, which is completely useless - who wants one massive list of all the random songs in your collection?!

More importantly, they still haven't put the thumbs up / down icons back in, which IMO is essential for radio learning your likes and dislikes. It's there on the mobile app and should be on Sonos - Google Music has it, I think I recall Rdio having it and Deezer has favourites, so it should be doable.

Yet again I'll let the sub lapse and probably end up going back to Google Music. Impatiently waiting for Apple Music to launch on Android and Sonos so I can try that.

In other news.... has anyone seen about the Chromecast Audio thing? I'm thinking that might be useful as a way of getting other audio into my Sonos speakers. I have a Play 5, which (along with the Connect and Connect amp) have an aux in.

I'll keep an eye on it and what apps will be able to cast to it.

Yeah - the Chromecast audio is a fairly useful add on to Sonos. ATM though I have a turntable attached to mine.

I just bought a Chromecast Audio - it does exactly as it says on the tin.
If they can get the Chromecasts talking to each other so they can parallel stream in different rooms etc, then it could be a Sonos competitor at an absolute steal.

Edit:
I'm thinking of sticking one of these on it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...A296LCZA0NL92L
and finding a pair of reasonable speakers...possibly in a charity shop. You'd be amazed what shows up in them.

I saw a post on Engadget or something the other week saying Chomecast audio does what Sonos does for a fraction of the price, but with the Chromecast Audio you still need to have or add speakers, and they either need an amp or need to be powered themselves so it's not quite as straight forward comparison.

It does look a good though. Have they said they'll be adding multi-room support?

Apparently they are working on multi room.

Can the Chromecast Audio stream to multiple speakers at once?

It's just a little hocky puck thing the size of a large coin - it's got a headphone out jack on it that you use to connect it to an amp. It does output stereo.
Multiple speakers would depend on the amp you connect it to.

If they can get as many audio apps working on both iOS and Android it could huge, a great addition to any music set up. Even just being able to play from MediaMonkey to one linked to my Sonos 5 would be good.

Am I correct in thinking that anything connected to a Sonos device with line in can be played on any other Sonos speakers?

Do you have Android or iOS devices? What apps have you found do / do not work so far?

I imagine it'll be one set of speakers per Chromecast as it's stereo a line out, unless you put it through an amp connected to multiple speakers that can do the splitting.

If they get multiroom working it should be able to play to multiple Chromecasts and therefore multiple sets of speakers.

Sorry, should have been clearer - I meant multi-room a-la Sonos. Which it turns out was answered directly before my post - not sure how I missed that..!

I've answered my question too. I connected my headphone socket on my phone to the line in on the Play 5. It then shows up as a line in in the settings for that speaker, and I can tell it what type of device it is and what to do with it, so it can auto-play on a specified speaker when plugged in (which might be handy for some), or I can use a different speaker and select line in as the source and it will stream only to that speaker.

So that means the Chromecast Audio could be left connected to that speaker and I just tell it to play from the line in and then cast from my phone/ipad to the Chromecast Audio.

The only issue is that I noticed a slight noise from the Play 5 when the line in was connected, so I need to look into that further. Changing the settings (ie telling it what type of device is connected) seemed to make a difference so it could just be needing to work out the best input setting.

At £30 it makes a mockery of the cost of the Sonos Connect though; even if that is much better specced it's hugely overpriced.

Sorry, I literally plugged it in to a set of (reasonable) PC speakers last night to see how it worked. Was using an iPhone 5s with the Chromecast app. Then cast from Google Play. Setup was almost too easy - I didn't even have to faff around with the iPhone wireless settings.

Android is, of course, better supported but I've not had a chance to try.

Edit: with this there's a market for a Sonos-like Active speaker with a slot to pop the Chromecast in.

Ah, no worries. It'll be a while before I can get one out here, I was just wondering how many audio apps support it so far. One of the few frustrations I have with Sonos is not being able to just 'send' any music to it from my phone. I listen through MediaMonkey Android on my phone and that doesn't currently. The Android media player can cast to Sonos, but all my ratings needs to be done in Media Monkey.

My mate has just had an invite to to the Sonos Private Beta Recruit. On going through the sign up process it's very heavy and serious and you have to electronically sign legal documents and give assurances. He's happy of course with the confidentially element but are there consequences if you don't respond to feedback/surveys within the time stipulation. Just seems really heavy.

It's not that heavy once you're on it.. although they can get a bit snippy if you log bugs against older builds.

I can thoroughly recommend playing with Trueplay as part of the latest update.

It requires an iThing (Pad,Pod, Phone) to work, but the results are noticeable and greatly improve sound output.

Yeah - it's good. It's taken a lot of hard work to get it to that point though

Am hoping to get A-B testing in a future version.

Sonos are doing the two Play 1s for £299 offer again, direct and also in stores (it's on the John Lewis site).

Maybe the OP should rename the thread to cover all Sonos...?
