2000AD & Judge Dredd

The new film has tweaked my interest in 2000AD...

I used to get this every week when I was a kid, and must have a load of them up in my parents loft. Sadly, there would be so much stuff in the loft, trying to find them (if they are indeed still there) would be a right pain.

I quite fancy going back in and starting to read these again...what is the best way to do this?

I am unsure if I want 2000AD or just Dredd, as I seem to recall enjoying several of the other tales as well (Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper, Tharg are a few off the top of my head).

So please give me some recommendations...

Rogue, Dredd and Strontium dog are all available in great Rebellion trade editions at the moment.

There's 19 Dredd Case files books (it's up to about 1990 at the moment) plus 3 "restricted files" books (contains mega special and annual stories)

Strontium Dog is available in 2 or 3 books + the final solution (which has the worst artwork i've ever seen for the most part - it's unreadable)

Rogue Trooper is available in 2 books.

Strontium Dog is still fantastic, as is Dredd - although the early Dredd is more of a curio than anything else - the stories are very weak. I don't think it really becomes the Dredd i love until about book 3. Rogue is OK, but very samey when read all in one go.

I'd start with the Strontium Dog Case Files 1 if i were you...

Cheers for the advice chaps...I have already pretty much convinced myself that Dredd will be first, so these case files look like the perfect way for me to reintroduce myself to the big fella.

Looking on Amazon it appears that volume 3 goes for daft money...any ideas why this volume stands out?

So, I think I may go and order volume 1 now...I have not read 2000AD or Dredd since I was about 10 years old...29 years later, I hope it'd as enjoyable as it was back in the day.

well Im 44, and have all the Dredd case files along with Judge Anderson and Strontium Dog. I read them all in rotation constantly because I enjoy them so much as they bring back that piece of lost childhood!

The first Dredd stories are quite horrid, its around volume 5 its generally advised to start, where it picks up into the good stuff (apocalypse war). Halfway through vol 3 your meant to see an improvement, but 5 is where the solid run starts, and then peters off when Garth Ennis takes over (who admits himself his Dredd stories werent very good). The best Dredd story is America, so if you want a cheap option you could see if you coudl just pick this up as a starter.

I've just started getting it again weekly just like I did as a kid and ordered from the local newsagent as well. It's still a great read. The current Dredd story, Day of Chaos, has been amazing and they've just started a new story starring Alun Turing in an alternative universe.

Definitely worth checking out if, like me, you were surprised it was still going. It's nice getting a British comic once a week - its still quirky and odd- and I don't have time to spend ages looking for comics these days. I tend to save them up and read them once a month. *hails mighty tharg*

it's a crying shame that Zenith never got a proper re-print. I know why (Phase III and legal wranglings), but it's still nothing could be sorted after all these years

I bloody loved Zenith! It was reprinted, then impounded. Some leaked out and you can occasionally get them on ebay.
I've still got the whole run in my loft

Nemesis and ABC Warriors is still the best though.

They really should sort the Zenith rights out. It would make a cracking film/TV show.

my love of certain stories waxed and waned depending on the artist.
I loved Slįine, except for the early artwork, loved Strontium Dog, except for the last series (how could anyone but Carlos Ezquerra draw Johnny Alpha??), loved Nemesis and ABC, although didn't like the later ABC artwork.

Nothing to do with the artist per se, more not liking the change.

I've got Phases I-IV in the loft in weekly form, but it'd be nicer to see them collected. They go for silly money on ebay!!

ALso WELL worth checking out is "The Ballad Of Halo Jones" by Alan Moore. One of the best 2000AD stories ever. Hell, one of the best comics ever full stop.

Horrid, how?

The pre-Apocalypse War periods include The Judge Child and The Cursed Earth as well as many great little tales, in my view. (Judge Death?)

The abundance of 2000AD riches is almost too easy to list, but Bad Company is one of my favourite strips of all time. The Nemesis story Gothic Empire probably runs a close second.

Book 1 is a stinker, but then Alan Moore dropped his "future space jive" dialogue and parts 2 & 3 are fantastic.

There's a few on ebay for decent prices.

I imagine they'll all be reprinted when the film comes out.
