I've had DS970 for a few years, but first the mic and now just last month the right earphone stopped working (loose connection) so I was in a similar position. In the end went for a cheap MH100 bluetooth remote off eBay - it has a plug so you can use your own pair of phones (useful for hooking up to a stereo as well).

I believe this model only comes bundled with particular SonyEricsson phones so eBay/resellers are the only source. There is a more expensive standalone version that displays track/caller ID and has radio built in but I found I never used the display on my DS970 (especially as iPhone doesn't support it) so MH100 is sufficient for my needs.. battery life is excellent.

It has buttons for play/pause, skip/seek and a call button. There is a volume control but for some reason it is a touch-sensitive slide operated (think laptop touchpad) rather than using buttons, which can seem unresponsive and is no good if you're wearing gloves but I don't personally find the need to adjust volume very often.

The volume adjustment also seems to be for an internal volume setting on the bluetooth unit rather than controlling the volume on the playback device. Actually I think this is better as since the 4.0 update my DS970 could no longer adjust the volume on my iPhone and I had to do it on the phone.

ta

need something not slidey for vol. would be using it in the gym and since i havent normalised my tracks then the odd one is louder than the rest

shame the ds980 isnt made anymore.

as for controlling the phone, mine used to on my sony ones but doesnt do it on my desire. only call vol for some reason.

anyhoo, i just leave the phone on max and control the BT units vol.
