Which console for 5-6 year old new to gaming

I want to source a console for my nephew who has never had a console before. He's tried Lego Indiana Jones on my 360 but struggled getting to grips with the controls. I realise that kids pick these things up quickly but I suspect that an xbox isn't the best start.

I'm thinking of a 2nd hand Gamecube or PS2 due to the cost and I suspect they will have the more suitable games. Any recommendations as to which console and which games for a boy of 5?

An Atari 2600, it's what I grew up on! Easy, classic gaming at it's best!!

Mega Drive or SNES with a few of the classics. Perfect for that age range... or maybe Dreamcast - has some nice kids games.

Can I suggest a NDS Lite?

My 4.5 year old loves it and is more than capable of playing Mario Kart and even Kirby Ultra Superstars.

The good thing about portability too is that you can take it out and use it to keep him occupied if needed.

Ono's suggestion probably best in hindsight.. but Dreamcast would still be very appropriate and cheaper

Pinched this list off the net, but it's an indication of the type of kids games for DC

  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Bust a Move 4
  • 4 Wheel Thunder
  • 101 Dalmations
  • Rayman (on the principle that there's lots of running around.)
  • StarWars Racer
  • Toy Story 2
  • Buzz Light Year
  • Pen Pen TriIcelon
  • kao the Kangaroo
  • frogger 2
  • Ms. PacMan maze
  • Chicken Run
  • Donald Duck Going Quackers
  • Dinosaur (based on the Disney movie)
  • Atari Anniversary
  • Namco Classics (has pacman, digdug, etc.)
  • Midway vol1 and Midway vol 2

Dunno if you would struggle to find these, where I live there are quite a few stores that still have tons of Dreamcast stuff for sale.

I think you're right on the money with the Gamecube idea. They're really cheap to pick up and Nintendo is always about playing to a family demographic.

The DS is not a bad idea too.

PS2 had a vast amount of games which can still be found quite cheaply. You'd struggle with a gamecube or anything older tbh, I think.

Failing that, and NDS lite would be perfect.

Nintendo DS Lite.

Could not do without it on long Car journeys, and just as good in the house. Plenty of Childrens Games available for it and fairly cheap as well.

We are sort of in a position just now where the Wife thinks some of the XBox Games are a bit 'older' for our 5 Year Old, so limiting him to 3+ Age Group Games just now and expanding his DS Library.

He does love the DS, so i would suggest that over anything else.

Nothing wrong with a 360 - my four year old is a dab hand at the lego games (especially the easier lego star wars games). He also loves Star Wars Battlefront and Lord of the Rings Conquest. He has learned from his older brother though (he's 8)

You're officially old when your 8 year old wipes the floor with you at Halo 3. This happened to me recently, so i had to slaughter him at Pro Evo to make myself feel better.

Gamecube. Most underrated console ever IMO. Stacks of great games for it and can be picked up for peanuts.

Get a ZX Spectrum and make him wait for the game to load like the good old days.
You could get one for Ł30 with 500 games

Wow thanks for all the replies.

I had thought of the DS as I have one that I make very little use of but I don't think my nephew takes good enough care of his toys for a DS to exist for more than a few hours.

The Dreamcast is a good idea but from memory the controllers are huge I do however still have a couple of pairs of Samba d'Amido maracas.

I'll look into the SNES and MegaDrive stuff.

lol with the Spectrum stuff. He couldn't possibly cope with waiting so long for a game to load, like most kids today he has a minuscule attention span.

Rest of the list is fine, but no way is Ecco the Dolphin a kid's game. Sure, it's got no excessive violence or anything in it, but it's also INCREDIBLY HARD. If I was a kid, I'd get way too frustrated with it easily. Oh, wait. I did, and I was in my 20s then!

I agree, gaming excellence was never so seriously cheap.

A Gamecube or a DS Lite if he wants to be able to play it out and about

Wuss

I think a kid would still enjoy playing it, even if they didn't actually complete any of the objectives.

I found the MegaDrive version rock hard!

Still think there is a lot of play in the DreamCast for a kid, DS Lite is great but much more expensive, especially once you add games..

Gamecube would be good too.

Would have thought a Wii would be ideal for his age. I have nephews of 4 and 6 who enjoy playing on the Wii loads.

The console is cheap but the games, espically anything with mario in it are stupidly expensive.

We have a PS2 and a Wii and my 4 year old plays both of them but seems to be enjoying the Wii more. you might get a Gamecube cheap but I'd say the Wii would be the better option as you can play Gamecube games and also plug in Gamecube controllers.

He particularly likes the Lego games and has nearly completed Lego Star Wars and Bat Man.

We got him a DS Lite for Christmas which he equally loves playing and as others have said is a godsend due to it's portable nature. On that he's get in to Mario Kart (which he doesn't seem to like on the Wii) as well as the above mentioned Lego games. We do have the advantage that out older son has had a DS for a couple of years so we already had plenty of games.
