Help identifying old (SF?) story please

This story is at least 30 years old. I'm not even sure if it was a novel or short story. If anyone can give me any leads I would be grateful.
It involves a boy who buys a walking stick or shooting stick.
He goes shooting with his father(?).
He is fiddling with the stick handle twsiting it and notices that he would have a much better vanatge point for shooting ducks if he was based in a clump of bushes nearer the ducks.
He says something like 'I wish I was over there' and shazzam, he is in the clump of bushes.
...
more adventures...
He goes back to a boarding (?) school.
When back at the school some unsuspecting other boy is in trouble for something. Second boy is in first boy's room and is holding the stick and says something like 'I wish I wasn't here'. Shazzam - both second boy and stick diappear.
First boy panics - big investigation ensues - can't remember final outcome.

I don't know the story, but could make great use of a stick like that.

It rings a bell, but I can't place where I read it. Probably one of those short-story anthologies by old library had loads of back when I was a kid.

On a similar note, though, does anyone else think that of the various "Teenage boy finds magic watch that can freeze time" type stories... Not ONE of them has been realistic?

Or been followed by the inevitable "9 months later... " sequel

It's not an uncommon trope, and from the details given I'm afraid I can't say which story it is. The most I can say is that it's *not* Alfred Bester's "Star Light, Star Bright".

I've been trying to find a "Best Science Fiction" book myself for ages now, as it had a great selection of stories, including "Who Goes There" ( the basis for "The Thing" ) and "Enemy Mine".

Thiiick paperback, the cover had what looked like pink, eyeless, limbless brontosauruses, or something...
Not easy to find! LOL

Heh. Yeah. I also used to have some "Space Wars - Worlds And Weapons" hardbacks, that took paintings from hundreds of different book covers, and set them in a fictional overarcing history, with no connection to the actual stories they were the covers for.
