The shield
The Wire
The Sopranos

It's no coinceidence that everyone who sees them thinks they are 3 of the best tv shows ever made.

edit - Plus you can pick up most seasons of the shield for about £12

All 3 of them should be 1st on your list (The Wire at the top of that list).

And after that check these out:

Battlestar Galactica
Arrested Development
Carnivale
Supernatural

am up to ep 11 of S1 - it's ok (in a poor X-Files sort of way) but am only sticking with it as people on this forum say it gets much better

hope they're right

The West Wing. Doesn't get much better than that, plus there's a whole seven series to get through so you wont run out for a while!

I would say Dexter and possibly Oz from your list (the best prison series ever), and also possibly firefly (adam baldwin from chuck is in it)

The Wire - the greatest show there will ever be.

Also Firefly - another class effort.

The shield
The Wire
Sopranos
West Wing
Battlestar Galactica
Seinfeld
Heroes

and I've not been keen on UK shows but would recommend:

Veronica Mars, definitely (grown up and fun drama/mystery)
Dexter (dark adult comedy drama)
Arrested Development (quirky, observant comedy)
Firefly (hilarious, genius sci-fi/western action drama)
Deadwood (very adult, very intelligent western drama)
Oz (brutal, compelling prison drama, makes Prison Break look like a kids show)
Battlestar Galactica (dark adult sci-fi drama, extremely compelling)
