Brilliant episode - best one since the pilot IMO. BTTF-tastic!

Crikey, it finally happened.
Lost came out of the closet, proudly stood in front of it's audience, and said:
"Yes, I am a hardcore science fiction show afterall.
After all those dabblings with smoke monsters, giant statue feet and disappearing cabins, I have to confess I have admitted to using time travel as a narrative device.
I know it goes against the teaching of the Christian Church, but I hope you will still love me and not think differently of me."

It didn't though. The only main character that's time travelling is Desmond (and maybe Faraday if he hangs around for the rest of the season), and that's as a result of his specific circumstances of being nuked when the hatch went up, and then passing through the time/space/whatever distortion field that protects the island. And even he is not really time travelling in the usual sense, his conscience got detached from his timeline and skipped around a bit.

Just because a side effect that's happening to Desmond turned out to be messing with time does not make the whole show about time travel or hard-core sci fi.

Not quite what I'm saying Kenny, my tongue is in my cheek there, but this IS the first proper confirmed use of a Science Fiction concept in the show. Obviously, we all knew it was a sci fi show at heart, but this is the first time the show has explicitly stepped over the line and stated within its own rules that it is.

Anyway, another thing that has struck me as a result of this episode - you probably won't see Locke off the island.

He is the only other surviving character who was in the Hatch when it went nuts, and so was exposed to a huge dose of electro magnetism. Admitedly not as much as Desmond when he turned the key at Ground Zero, but he would also likely start time travelling if he went off island.

Of course, the above could fuel the whole Locke-Jacob theory quite nicely if you wanted it to...

If Locke is Jacob I think it's pretty clear where the inspiration will have come from, I just hope he has his ready brek before his travels!

just watched. And had no idea what it was all about. But did well up at the penny/desmond chat.

and i assumed he said Sayied at the end as he remembered his name from earlier on the boat, not that he remembered him, there was a pause before saying it.

When he's on the phone to Penny he says "I've been on an island" so he does have his memory back.

I hope everyone has read themisfitishere this week!

Listen to the way he thanks Sayid, it's pretty clear he's the same Desmond as he was 5 minutes before, ie. with little or no memory of Sayid. Although Lostpedia seems to agree with TM and stupidboy. Badly acted? Poorly scripted? I don't know, but the way he said Sayid suggested to me he was thanking him as if he were a new friend.

Great episode - seems to me like he had his full memory back though at the end.

My take is that the suggestion is that contacting his constant has restored the balance of the equation, hence the travelling consciousness returns to 1997 and his present day (2004) consciousness returns, so he has a full memory of all events, including the time shifting.

i think Desmond is back to his present self but shoddy scripting leaves us confused! past-Desmond was told that he'd been on an island so he would have said that to Penny. The way he said "thank you... Sa'id" sounded like he was still past-Desmond too.

if he'd said something thar only present-Desmond would have known it would have been much clearer!

after all that i'm now undecided about which Desmond is back - hopefully we'll find out tomorrow!

So what happened to his 2004 Consciousness, while his 1996/7 Consciousness was in his 2004 body?

Maybe the same thing that happened to Minkowski? He almost seemed to be frozen in time for that short period when he was jumping. His body was completely motionless.

whether Faraday knew that 305 was wrong or not is open to debate (whether or not 325 is right is also open to debate!)
Perhaps the island is a kind of "timehub" and depending on the heading you take you will return to a different time. So a heading of 305 sends the helicopter back to the time and place from which it originated, hence a slight deviation makes them arrive slightly later in the day. Perhaps Ben send Michael and Walt on a heading of 325 to send them to a different time, either past or present?

Perhaps the Island is moving in relation to the rest of the world, so the bearing would differ over time.

So Did I miss something? Desmond had to simply call Penny? For what reason?

The phone bit made me laugh. I expected " Hi Penny this is Chris Tarrant from WWTBAM, I have Desmond here and he's stuck on a question for 16 thousand pounds"

I thought it was a bit of a boring episode really, had bits of Quantum leap , BTTF and every other sci-fi thrown in for good measure and it dragged on a bit.

I thought it was a very good episode, back to the excitement of Season 1 !!! This season so far has exceeded my expectations and the writers clearly know how its going to end now. No more crappy filler episodes hopefully.
