3 more weeks then a 5 week break then 5 more episodes this season!

The thing about "constants" is that they must be aware of them and of what they mean to them for them to have any use, no? Maybe that'll explain Kate's horse!

Oooh, maybe Hurley was Libby's constant? Perhaps she started 'jumping' back in time during her stay on the island, and realised she recognised Hurley from the mental asylum? Maybe that explains why she was in the mental asylum to begin with. If, like Desmond, she was slowly getting more sick the longer she spent apart from her constant, maybe the moment she found Hurley began to turn her life around? It would certainly explain how she seemed totally with it in Desmond's flashback. Hopefully we'll see more of Libby's story in someone else's flashbacks.

And something else! I know it has been mentioned before, but what if the flashbacks aren't flashbacks at all? Perhaps when someone has a flashback, their consciousness is actually jumping back to some previous point in their lives, as a result of arriving unsafely on the Island (i.e. in the same way that the helicopter left the Island unsafely through an electromagnetic storm). Desmond was affected by the EMP radiation when he turned the key in the Swan Station, which means he's now the only person who is conscious of the 'time traveling' nature of these flashbacks. Because Charlie was in the Station when it blew, he was effected also. This is why Desmond and Charlie's fates were tied together: future Charlie became Desmond's constant during his 'flash forward' and vice versa. When Charlie died, Desmond had to find a new constant to stay in control of his 'jumping'. The storm exacerbated this, hence the confusion.

Actually, I think I'm talking rubbish.

Thing with that is that eveyone else would've noticed everyone else falling into catatonic states every few hours, so it can't happen from a storytelling point of view.

True, true. I don't really like that theory anyway. Flashbacks are a perfectly credible way of storytelling, so they don't need to retro-fit a new explanation. However, I am very interested in Desmond's connection with Charlie. Surely his ability to see the future is somehow tied to his 'consciousness jumping'. Bearing in mind Daniel Faraday said you can't change the future - maybe he meant that you can try to change the future, but you'll get the same result. Similar to the "course correcting" speech that the old woman in the jewelry shop gave Desmond. Maybe Desmond's flashes of the future were in fact his future self (from a possible future) jumping back into his past consciousness! Each time Desmond succeeds in saving Charlie, he jumps back into his past consciousness and a new, alternate future is formed. And so on and so forth. When Charlie did eventually die, past-Des (present, from our POV) caught up with future-Des and that's when his flashes stopped. But then he flew into the storm and suffered the same side effects as Minkowski, and began jumping back again. Only this time his constant - Charlie - was dead, hence problems.

Listen to the latest audio podcast (Feb 28th) with 'Darlton', Si, as it sets straight a few of the rules they are using for time-travel such as no alternate realities etc.

So any ideas why the island had a button to press yet?
Dont forget reports of a shadowy figure running around the wreckage in the 1st episode.
Cloverfield shows that JJ likes to add stuff most people will not see unless they read the internet!
Stuff like that makes peeps keep adding to these threads

This PDF details some of the things that are written in Faraday's notebook.

They did. It was called Journeyman & only lasted 13 episodes before being cancelled.

So, erm... I'm the only one who was a bit 'meh' about this episode...?

I thought that although it advanced the plot in an interesting manner and I like the end twist, it just wasn't very exciting as a whole.

Desmond thinks it is 1996 so I assume that is the year when he tells Penny he will call her in 8 years time?

So when he makes the call from the boat to Penny she is in 2004 ?

She says she had been looking for him for 3 years.

What made her start looking for Desmond? Was it becasue she spoke to Charlie or was she already looking?

She was already looking, since he went missing in 2001 (ie. he never returned from the round the world boat race).
Seriously, is it really this hard to follow?

More stunning episodes like this please, and less of the turgid soap opera we got last week. Awesome episode - I may just watch it again right now

Desmond told Penny that he was going on the round the world race, circa 2001. He didn't return. So Penny started looking for him.

If she wasn't already looking for him then she wouldn't have had the arctic station looking for the electromagnetic signal, and also wouldn't have been trying to call the island like when she spoke to Charlie.

No, and the constant thing seemed absolute ******** to me.

Also Demonds phonecall to Penny, in 30 seconds he could have said I'm a freighter 40 miles off an island in the pacific with the survivors of flight 8.15 and we need you to come and get us, and still had time to ask if she was alright, I missed you etc.

This is one of the things that ****** me off about Lost, the reaction that99.9999% of people would have to an opportunity to find out something more or tell someone some important information and it's never taken.

Desmond's memory was screwed up & it was only during that call he started to get it back. You notice Sayid's reaction when Desmond tells Penny that he's been on an island, the first indication that his memory was returning. Alas, the old "battery has gone flat" trick stopped him from providing those all important details you mention.

Normally I'd agree with that Shakey but it was the last thing on my mind when Desmond was talking to Penny! Of course you're right but I was too caught up in them to care about the survivors of 815 or anything else in that moment!

What you have to remember as well is that each character only has their own experiences to go on. For Desmond, he just wants to get back to Penny. He doesn't really care or even know exactly where they are (remember, he's been there a lot longer than the 815 survivors...)
