Which surround sound system

Ok guys think of me as a complete novice when trying to answer my question.

I'm building my own home cinema room and have all but decided on a projector but dont know which surround sound system to get.

I will probably end up connecting my projector, dvd player and xbox to the surround sound but don't really know how thats going to work.

I have a budget of upto £250 quid but the cheaper the better.

Should I be looking at a speaker package from richer sounds like this http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct/TANN-FX5.1-SIL

Or buying a receiver and speakers seperately?

That Tannoy package is cheaper in Superfi.

This was the one I recommended to my Brother in Law who had a similar budget. He went into get them yesterday and managed to get an ex-display set of Kef KHT1005 instead for less money. I've just come back from installing them, and they really are quite good for a small set of speakers, and for the money. The sub is a bit boomy, but otherwise I was impressed.

why not go for the AV61 package with the Yamaha RX-V361 amp and those NSP speakers all for £219 from Richer Sounds or Superfi?
You can find a couple of places doing them for £195 online.

Or the Sony DDW890 6.1 package for about £230 from pixmania?

you want an amp and speakers. work out what outputs your kit has, for proper surround sound you'll be looking for optical or coax outputs on the back of your sources. you then need an amp with enough inputs and a suitable output to send the video to the projector. write down all your kit's connections and you've got youre requirments for the amp.

is hidef likely to come into the equation at any point soon? you dont want to go and buy an amp now only to realise you need to buy another one in the near future.

There's this recent thread which covers a few suggestions and how you might split your budget in various ways - it's worthwhile thinking about whether you're going to stand mount or wall mount your speakers and the size of the room overall. As that may affect the suitability of different AV amp/speaker combinations.

One of my fave ever purchases from the bargain forums was a Pure Digitheatre DTS Platinum in 2003 or so.

For some reason we all got it for £200ish when the retail was nearer £500 - mine is still going strong and I have to honest I'd have paid £500 for it - excellent sound and tiny powerfull satelilte speakers.

If you can pick a set of these up you won't be disappointed but unless you can find a bargain they may be slightly over budget.
