Speaker Cable Recommendation...

I've just bought a 5.1 speaker set (KEF 1005s) and wondered if the quality of the cabling provided is considered good enough or whether I would be better investing in 'better' cabling.

The guy in the shop recommended I buy QED Micro and said the cables provided aren't very good - but this might be a token attempt to get me to part with even more money.

I don't want to go buying new cable if the cables provided do the job adequately but at the same time, I'm happy to replace them if there would be a noticeable improvement in sound quality...

I'd appreciate anyone's opinion on either the KEF 1005 cabling or general advice on what to consider.

Thanks...

If you mean the QED Micro, I think it was Ł1.85 per metre...

Personally, I wouldn't imagine KEF would produce a decent set of speakers then provide rubbish cabling but I don't know enough about these things!

It's a big debate, one that I don't profess to be expert in but there's a lot of info about regarding the subject.

This post teh other day summed it up for me

It depends on what equipment you have.

Feel, yes. Hear, no.

There is absolutely no reason why any competent cable should sound different than another, and noone has ever proven either scientifically or subjectively (under controlled conditions) that cables produce an audible difference.

I have to say that with expensive source and speakers the (analogue) cables do change the tonal qualities of the sound, i.e. some increase the bass some sound more open in the mid range etc. To be fair though in most home cinema setups you would have to spend so much money on the rest that you wouldn't mind splashing out on top notch cables.

Each to their own, but my experience is speaker cables can change the sound you hear and therefore you may want to try some different ones to see if you prefer one over another in your system. If you find you can't tell the difference then great, it'll save you some money

Well, I do have expensive kit, and I've never heard a difference. How on earth can a mere cable increase the bass?

There's a bloke on uk.rec.audio who for years has been offering something like ten grand to someone who will demonstrate to him that they can hear a difference under blind listening conditions. Noone has ever taken up the challenge.
