Loco I just don't get it.... (HD-DVD)

Okay so I have about 9 titles now and I've worked my way through each one... MI 1 & 2 were alright but not jump out of the screen standard. Superman Returns was Washed out and some people have said that was supposed to be the look of the film. MI3 and Phantom Of The Opera, better then that lot but still not quite what I was expecting in picture quality...

.... Then Yesterday, I go ahead and watch King Kong and Batman Begins.... Superb quality.... King Kong especially, I was blown away, it was shocking the detail, the colours... Miss Watts seemed to be gazing longingly out at me at some stages *shudders*. I Scoffed at the other titles on my shelf and sobbed over the fact Jack Black could be so cruel to the ape... (I'll give him what for when I see him at the M.E.N Arena tomorrow....

I just don't get how the quality seems to differ so much, even the menus to the watered down version of King Kong were impressive, shocking, just shocking. (But Worth It!)

Are some studios just not taking the time and effort to make proper HD Transfers or are they going to wait for a format winner before releasing the Super Duper Picture Refined Special Limited Edition?

My guess is it's the same sort of thing as standard def DVDs. Some stand above the rest.

But still with MI 1 &2 you could prolly get a nifty upscaler to output that kinda quality... it concerns me. The quality seemed to make the movies better too which is strange... Last time I watched Batman Begins, I was well bored.... yesterday.... Superb!!!

As someone who can't afford a Hi-def TV and DVD player yet I find this news very pleasing

I am loathed to spent lots of money replacing any existing DVD's I own with HD-DVD versions.

Until this format war settles, I think i'm only going to buy new releases which I don't actually have on DVD.

I couldn't resist buying Serenity though

Sorry to tell you this but Sky Captain is probably the worst film ever made.

Sky Captain is indeed crapola, only reinforced by the dreadful inclusion of Jude law.

For those of us who can cast their minds back to 98, it's worth remembering that a lot of the early R1 DVDs were non-anamorphic and the picture quality on some of those NTSC discs looked worse than PAL VHS.

It will get better, and of course the studios know that all you early adopters are the kind of people who will lap up the improved editions when they come out in 18 months time.

Personally I think MI3 looks superb.

Serenity and Superman II look the best that I've seen them but not as good as MI3.

King Kong looked good too but I couldn't sit through it again.

DVD transfers can differ wildly I imagine the same will happen with HD, sadly.

The duck shed a tear... nasty Jack Black... Blaming poor Ms Watts for her affinity to beastiality..... It did kinda worry me, the look she was giving the ape....

I suppose it could just be a case of teething issues for studios, at least we don't ahve to struggle with BR-esque artifacts on our transfers....

on a side note.... Sky Captain thingy went to pending too quickly

I shed a couple of tears too and I've not spoken to the person who took me to watch it, since.

Sky Captain is awful, I quite like Jude Law too.

Corpse Bride is worth a watch, very good picture, ok movie.

I have it on DVd and only watched it once but I didnt mind it that much. It's a hammy 1950's adventure movie type of thing and reasonably enjoyable. Not worth the noise that was made about it at release due to the way it was shot and not much rewatch value but you can at least watch it once and then resell it or something.

When I think about Sky Captain I always think of a quote from the Empire review at the time it was released about Jude Law's performance:

"It can't be easy acting opposite a piece of blank canvas.... or Gywneth Paltrow as she's otherwise known"

I have found the jump from Upscaled DVD to HD-DVD is not what i hoped for. I do think my AE700 projector is partly to blame as im sure on a 42" LCD/Plasma at 720p/1080p it jumps out at you. I have sold all my HD-DVD stuff at a small loss bar the 360 addon and look forward to starting again when i get a true 1080p projector.
Dont get my wrong though i could see the difference on my setup and Serenity looked stunning but its all soon forgotten.
