Distorted sound on Dell Dimension - help!

My new(ish) Dell has just started giving up the ghost in the sound department. All sounds now sound completely distorted and I can't work out why. It happened before and managed to right itself on a restart - but the problem seems stuck now. I can't work out what on earth to do - can anyone help?

Ta.

Try plugging headphones or powered speakers into the laptop. If the sound is OK then you have a problem with the laptop's speaker(s). If the sound is still distorted check Dell's web site for updated audio drivers.

Sorry - it's a desktop, not a laptop. Plugging in headphones still gives me the problem. Updated audio dirvers didn't help...

Don't know where I got laptop from?

Do you have a PCI sound card or is the chipset embedded on the motherboard? If it's a PCI card you could try removing it & refitting in case it's a poor connection. If it's embedded then it sounds like a replacement motherboard may be required.

Alas.. it is an embedded soundcard...

Could have sworn I had a spare alternate soundcard to use - but can't find the damned thing. Oh well... If worst came to worst - could I get a replacement soundcard and use that unstead of the embedded one?

It should be covered by warranty but unless you have on-site then it will probably be easier to fit a PCI. Just disable the onboard chipset in BIOS.

I think that sounds the best bet - so can anyone recommend a cheap soundcard?
