Thumbs up *The Official PS3 Thread*

Thought it was about time to start discussion about the next generation of the Playstation console.

The "Cell"
The BBC have helpfully had a first look at the "Cell" processor that will constitute the PS3 chip.
BBC News Article
There is also a good article explaining the principle HERE.

Graphics
Apparently NVIDIA have teamed up with Sony to create the graphics chip (Source). EA have also released some artistic impressions of what the graphics may look like on the PS3. They excited me a bit....

Trailer
A Next-Gen console demo has been released HERE but it is not clear yet whether this is for Xbox 2 or PS3. It isn't all that exciting but it shows that at least they're making some progress! I'll post more videos as and when they become available.

Logo
Fairly uninspiring and predictable!

Price?
THIS article suggests that there'll be a 200 Euro version just for next gen games and a 700 Euro all singing all dancing media centre with the possibility of a hard drive and wireless capabilities.

anyone else think 2006 is gonna be a good year?

let the hype begin!

Those screenshots do look amazing ... just as good as the ones used for showing the PS2's capabilities!

If you honestly think the graphics will look like on that first pic then you are on crack.

Artistic impression = pre rendered CGI.

700 Euro version you can stuff that for a start so the basic version won't even have a HD?

last i heard the XBOX2 might not even have a hard drive. Seems like they are going backwards in capabilities rather than forwards! I rekon they realise that everyone is going to want it so they could charge an extra Ł50 after release date and so onli have it as a peripheral. Annoying really, but maybe they'll see sense in the next couple of years.

The problem with at on peripherals is that very few people by them, just look at the 32X or Mega CD. Heck how many people have bought one for the PS2 not me and I have had one since day one. Whatever they put in the basic machine is what will be in the majority of people’s living rooms.

As for Xbox 2 not having a HD I have heard the same thing too but I do believe they are looking at other solutions like flash cards that can hold a gig of data but I have to agree with you it is a step backwards.

Remeber - the PS3 vs XBox2 could help to determine the future of the HDDVD wars. Sony will almost certainly be fitting the PS3 with a BluRay drive where as M$ are tipped to use an HD-DVD drive. Whichever console has the bigger penetration into households could help shift the balance and possibly benefit Blu-Ray. It's in Sony's interest to get PS3 into as many homes as possible for the BluRay launch so people can go straight out and buy BluRay discs. Microsoft don't have as much at stake (they are only a HD-DVD supporter and probably haven't spent too much money on it) so if XBox2 launches after the PS3 (looking likely) it could give BluRay a potentially insurmountable lead.

As for the screenshots, I'm more inclined to believe the second one could happen. I wonder if 1080p will become an output option with the power of these chips.

The only way I'll get a PS3 is if it's the cheapest Blu-ray player available.

I recognise those pics from above, they look very similar to the graphics Rash Race on the 3DO was supposed to have. I still haven't seen anything close.
