buying a ps2

Now that the winter is coming I thought that I might get a PS2, does anyone know of any good deals? Is it worth getting a PS2 or are there better consoles out there? My boyfriend mainly wants it for golf games and I like platform games...any help will be appreciated. I'm not really 'up' on consoles

I am bought one last week from Argos but read about a new PS2 coming out on 1st Nov so returned it and shall buy the new model.

The price is the same and Amazon are also taking preorders for it.

I'd consider a Gamecube or even an XBox. However if you're stuck on a PS2 wait for the PStwo, a much smaller, sleeker model (there's a thread here).

For golf games you can get either a PS2 or an x-box as both have decent titles such as Tiger Woods.

As for platformers think PS2 has probably got a better selection, although most of the really good ones (i.e Prince of Persia) are on both platforms just ones like Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank are PS2 exclusive.

It's the age old debate.
IMHO if the game is multiplatform, the XBox version is normally the best, and I prefer the XBox controller too, so it's really down to platform exclusives and whether you want to play online.
For me, the only reason to have a PS2 is for the quirky/JAP titles that are lacking on XBox. A GC is a must for Nintendo exclusives and shouldn't be overlooked.
Of course with prices as they are why limit yourself to one platform

It's worth getting a PS2 simply for GTA:San Andreas. In a couple of weeks time. *counts days*

Theres Links and Tiger Woods golf games on the x-box and they're probably two of the best in the genre.

X-box is made by microsoft

To be honest the consoles will probably cost the same from a Game store as it will an on-line shop, but the bundles with it will differ. Chances are if you bought it from somewhere like gameplay.co.uk you could choose some of your own bundle games.

Go to Toys R Us who normally have great deals with a number of games with each console.

I have an XBOX, my brother has a PS2. I think the XBOX is great fun!

Microsoft, but does it matter who makes it (maybe aside from some evil terrorist organisation)?

If you've got broadband your boyfriend might fancy playing Links 2004 (golfgame) online. However it'll cost you £30/year (you might get a game free with that) but it's mostly worth every penny.

If you get the Gamecube, you can get Tiger woods AND Mario golf AND Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 (with Golf mini-games) as well as platformers like Super Mario sunshine.

Or wait a while and play it on xbox. You can fill the 'while' bit by playing the genuinely exclusive Halo 2 instead.

Halo 2? Pah, if it's as rubbish as Halo 1, you'd be better off watching Richard and Judy while you wait for GTA San Andreas.

Halo = FPS. GTA = Work of art.

I'd say for the casual gameplayer, the PS2 is streets ahead. It's always been my personal favourite, while the Gamecube just gathers dust these days. I've come close to buying an Xbox a few times, but I can't justify it. I get most of my games on the PS2, the exclusives don't really appeal to me, and the other things you can do with one, I can pretty much do well enough on my pc.

Still, its all about personal preference.

Well, I'm sure I'm not the only one to say this, but I've got all 3(cube, PS2, Xbox).
I've just bought my Xbox at the start of the month, to take advantage of the £99 deals that were/are knocking about.
For platform games, you can't go wrong with a game cube.
I think the Xbox is the most geeky of the consoles. It's what I'd class as a traditional gamers machine. It's more "boy" orientated. Where the PS2 seems to appeal to the more casual gamer. It has that "it's ok to own one" stamp on it. It's the trendy console to have. It's not the best, that's got to be the Xbox.
The only reason I'm not selling my PS2 is the new GTA game, I'm too impatient to wait until summer next year to play it on Xbox.

I think you'd be best off buying a PS2. A massive back catalog, and is cheap as chips to buy.
