TV on HD-DVD

Noticed an advert for the West Wing Season 7 and Smallville Season 5 in HD-DVD enclosed with the 2nd series of Veronica Mars. Anyone heard any more details about this - or what other TV seasons we can expect on HD DVD?

Sopranos Season 6 has been announced for 7th November, that's the first and only HD DVD TV announced officially so far. More HBO stuff including Band of Brothers is rumoured.

Apparently Friends is also scheduled for a release. Great.

I'm not someone who "double dips" on DVD's but if Band of Brothers comes out on HD-DVD then I'd be sorely tempted. I'd just have to source a player then.

Same as me.... I've got it, I want it again, I'd need a player and a TV to go with it though....

I like older TV shows, a lot of which wouldn't benefit from HD. Can you imagine, for example, how ropey, Dr Who would look in HD or US shows like The Incredible Hulk?

The Incredible Hulk and things like that exist as film prints, so they could benefit from HD.

Things like Doctor Who or any TV show that was made or edited on video tape will not have any benefit at all though. Sadly that applies to many US shows made around the early to late 90s. Star Trek TOS being all on film will look much better on HD, while TNG for example was shot on film*but* it was post produced and edited on video tape as the final master, so won't look any better.

rumour has it Universal will be releasing Battlestar Galactica on HD, no dates yet though. Which is why I have resisted purchasing so far. Don't want to be double dipping.

yes thenew version, which was indeed shot in HD. I still have a few older series to pick up in DVD format but have decided for the newer stuff such as Lost and BSG to hang on and see what happens with the HD releases...

Yes, but what about the production values of such shows? Will you, for example, be able to see the make-up artists' palm prints all over Lou Ferrigno's body where they've smeared on the green paint? We used to watch it on a B&W 21" TV when it first aired and you could see the make-up was patchy even then.

Probably yes. Although you can already see the occasional dodgy makeup efforts on the DVDs But to be honest, for most TV sets I've already bought I have no plans to upgrade them, as I'd be perfectly happy watching them upscaled. The potential is there however, Columbo, Rockford Files, Magnum P.I. etc.

I'm looking forward to Sopranos 6 on HD-DVD. I won't be upgrading my DVD editions for seasons 1-5 though since the picture on those still looks fab on my LCD screen.

For older shows it would be nicer if they could fit a whole season on 2 or 3 discs instead of 6 or 7.

Firefly has been scoped for a HD release, and it could be the title that makes me consider a BR player.

Now that is interesting. I've only seen Lost in hi-def, albeit probably a bit compressed, but it looks great (not surprising given the quality of the camera-work).

Firefly would be ace to have in HD, but is it likely to be BR only?

While Fox refuse to work with the HD-DVD market, yeah.

Though I'm not sure who owns the rights now? Does all of Whedon's material now move to Universal, now that he is making films for them?

Like a football transfer kinda deal?

The Universal HD channel is currently showing Firefly in HD

It looks *fantastic* , and would be a welcome release.

Excuse my ignorance, but surely Firefly is a few years old and wouldn't have been filmed in HD? Or am I talking rubbish?

Or do they 'restore' it like they do with old films

Also, slightly OT, but if I'm watching an HD transmission on my laptop which has a TFT screen, am I watching true HD?

I imagine any program of the past few years has been shot with being broadcast in HD in mind (by shooting it either on film or HD cameras).
The US have had HDtv for a while now.

Also anything that was shot on 35mm film can easily have a HD version created.

It is true HD if the resolution is in 1080i or 720p.
