£240 is a ridiculous price for hardware that's only a little more powerful than the PS4. It doesn't matter if that's reasonable regarding the cost of manufacture, paying that much for a tech that's old just doesn't make sense for a customer IMO. I'd much rather pay an extra £160 and get some that's cutting edge.

I can't see any reason now why to buy a Wii U, for literally anyone. It's expensive and there's no great looking games for either the mass market (like Wii Sports on the Wii) or hardcore gamers.

The success of the Wii has gone to Nintendo's head and they've literally lost it. Unless they do something drastic this is going to be their Dreamcast.

Looking at what's in the box over at amazon it looks like it only comes with an HDMI cable. It's interesting that Nintendo are the first company to not pack in a composite cable.

Whilst I might prefer the white version, it's crazy that both models won't available in both colours.

This does annoy me slightly, same with the PS3 at launch (although more subtle), the 20GB with the black trim rather than chrome was so much nicer imo.

In the case of the Wii U I am far more likely to put the cash down for a black premium model, in no small part because it is black, much like the 360 Elite, so maybe that was their plan all along!

I might have to go for the Premium version if it does, as suggested earlier, come with a gamepad charging cradle as well.

Hang on, they want £50 more for the 32gb when they could have easily put in a 320gb internal HD for less?

Well Sony has already said that the initial ps3 pricing was a big mistake and any new machine would be in line with current consoles.

The U's a very confused swiss army knife of a machine. I can't help think that if it was just a gaming tablet (that could connect to a tv if you wanted.) and dropped the console bit it would sell like hot cakes.

But that would make the 'tablet' massive as all the processing power/tech is in the console; the gamepad is effectively just a classic controller with a screen in the middle.

£320 for the Zombii-U pack at Amazon, which isn't TOO bad if you were going to buy it anyway, given you get the pro controller too.

Why are people shocked at the price? The 360 and PS3 were more expensive than that and how many years use have you gotten out of them?

Hell I seem to remember paying more for the 8-bit consoles

I don't think they'll sell well at all at that price. You can get a 360 or a PS3 bundle for that with a couple of games. Give kids the choice and they'd go for one of those two every time IMO.

Any parent that already has a Wii isn't going to fork out that much for a slightly different newer Wii either just because it's got a screen in the controller.

Only the hardcore Nintendo enthusiasts who will pay to play any new Mario or Zelda game will be buying them in any number IMO. I expect Microsoft and Sony to outsell them in this country and the US at Christmas. Japan may be different though.

That price is cheap for a new machine.

I think I remember paying £399 for my Amiga. I certainly didn't get my money's worth from it compared to my £200 Xbox360.

Xbox720 can charge up to £499 for a premium bundle pack on release and people will pay it.

Agreed I see both PS4 and the next Xbox coming in around £400 min at launch.

For once I don't think I can buy a Nintendo console at launch, which is sad. The last one was a dreadful 'games' machine. I'll be waiting until the price drop and a steady catalogue of Nintendo exclusives is available.

The difference being that the 360 and PS3 were cutting edge consumer electronics and for a while after release were better than anything that could be reproduced on PC.

In comparison, the WiiU is tech from 4 years ago! It doesn't even have DX 11 support! In the same way that the Wii was basically just a Gamecube with a sensor, hence the £179 launch price. The WiiU is not going to last for 7-8 years and will be massively overshadowed by the other next gen consoles if Sony and MS approach them in the same was as the current gen were.

The current gen consoles are massively holding back the advancement of gaming graphics due to their ageing architecture, and the WiiU does nothing to push that bar forward.

Pricing a massive mistake for me here too. Although it carries backwards compatibility, so that will tempt a few parents at Christmas. It's too expensive to be an impulse purchase whereas the Wii was priced just about right.

There is virtually nothing that is innovative about the console either - it seems to be Wii + Tablet - so the novelty factor that the Wii had is not an issue here either.

Let's hope Nintendo get this hardware thing out of their system with this one and in a couple of years go software only. Imagine the $$$ that Sony or Microsoft would give to get their games as exclusives.
