Looking absolutely gorgeous on my prehistoric full HDTV - 4k must look properly breath-taking.

What did they film this with? Makes Planet Earth 2 look like the bloody moon landings on terrestrial tv.

The budget must be mental.

Going to bed.. watch the second half tomorrow. Good so far. I think BBC might try and sue the **** out of them.

Very impressive.

Great start I think - clearly a work-in-progress, and the celebrity section was terrible, but I hugely enjoyed just about everything else

The Grand Tour (2016) - Top Gear: The Sequel

So it's not "top gear" but it's "gear top"

How they are getting away with this is bonkers.

I enjoyed it but it's just "gear top" with better budget and no constraints. It looks ******* incredible on my 4K TV (first time I have used it).

The 'studio' parts were bordering on cringeworthy at times, the rest of it was great

Caught the first 40 minutes, utterly breathtaking, I'm wondering if they're going to keep up the quality all the way through or have some cheaper bits. The studio segments were a bit meh, I guess they want it to be timeless so aren't talking of new cars, etc.

What was the budget on the BBC? Things on Netflix can often cost £10m an episode.

However it is clearly as close to TG as they could make it without being sued.

Makes new Top Gear look even worse

I woke up stupidly early so I thought I might as well watch it. It was certainly Top Gear. Glad they got rid of the celebrity interview bit. Hopefully they'll have some of the adventure episodes as they were always my favourite.

Anyway thumbs up from me.

The magic of Top Gear is how you can take a plot that is obvious and make one of the most breathtaking opening sequences outside a Bond film. Epic, utterly epic. Three mates messing around and more conveyed in a look and a smile than any amount of shouting ever will.

Had a free Prime 30 day trial on my account yesterday which I activated, so will give this a watch. But from the comments and such mentioned on TV this morning, it seems like the real TG is back, albeit under a new name!

Not watched the whole show yet, however, I did just sneak just a quick look this morning from the very start, to where they had just got on the stage, and I literally cried tears down my face.
Just the pleasure/feeling the opening conveyed to me, very emotional.

The BBC TV critic's review is, as you might possibly expect, not as glowing as some others:

Good lord that's a bitter right up. Its like the wife got everything in the divorce and he's sitting in a bedsit eating beans watching her have fun.

It feels uncomfortably hubristic, he says.

Thing is, they are rock stars. They even look like ageing, sad, bit past it rock stars. But they've cultivated that admiration nevertheless.
