I thought it was hit and miss this week - the Jordan army stuff was simply awful but the rest was watchable.

Hopefully not a sign of the overall quality we are going to see from the remainder of the series though - it absolutely needs to be much more consistent.

The army bit did go on way too long.
Shame they didn't find some other car things in JoBerg, the tyre shredding segment was pretty cool.

First one wasn't too bad, but the American driver bits are shocking, feels like very forced humour. This episode was quite poor by comparison to the first, and nowhere near the quality of the BBC output by them. Don't think I'll be going out of my way to watch this

It ALL feels forced, that's the most disappointing thing about it. None of it feels natural like it did on Top Gear

I wouldn't be that surprised. it's clear they went a bit bonkers on the first one.

Watching this on a Fire TV Stick kept getting pauses/skips in the video no matter what settings I used for output or on the TV.

Did some reading and finally found that there's a hidden option for 24p output if your TV supports it, which isn't available through the normal settings.

Hold down << and Up together and eventually it will start cycling through output modes. Press select when it gets to 24p. No idea why it's been made this difficult

Seemed pretty obvious they did not have enough footage and it was too forced and irritating, the rest of the episode was fine though.

I thought they whole grand tour premise would involve their efforts to get to joberg or wherever.

The second ep wasn't great. The first part was ok, the rest was a bit ****.

I'm a little surprised it is such a knockoff of Top Gear. Thought they might have pushed the boundaries a little.

The celebrity thing is going to get really old really quickly

I'd have liked to see them record something in South Africa beyond the show, otherwise it's just an expensive tent which could be anywhere

Had no trouble watching it on my Wii U (but my TV is only 720p)

From a bit of Googling it seems like it's just the Fire devices that have the problem ironically. I don't recall the PS3 showing this issue either (which I don't use any more.)

As for the episode, they drew the main feature out way too long - that resetting would have been funny a couple of times maximum.

IIRC script editor Richard Porter (from Top Gear and Sniff Petrol fame) wasn't involved from the absolute start but did join TGT eventually, hopefully his influence will start to show.

Hopefully they'll get there...

Interesting interview with Andy Wilman here.

He speaks a little about catering, the tents (there are two), show format and working in 4K. There's also hints at a Christmas special (not confirmed for legal reasons). Was filmed sometime in the summer I guess.

The SA show was filmed before the California show. Somehow that makes sense as it was a weaker episode.

Having slept on it, I've changed my mind. Its like they watched the Chris Evans Top Gear episodes and thought, "We can out-***** this!"
If that thing about the script editor is true, they need to air the episodes with his input if they are to retain viewers.

Whilst it is basically a TG clone, it is a new program at the end of the day. They're still finding their feet, working out what they can and can't do. Being given what is pretty much an unlimited pot of money and told to get on with it was pretty overwhelming. They probably had a million ideas and the Jordan thing started as one off but got a bit too convoluted along the way.

I'm hoping the next episode the following happens.
'With the four celebrity deaths we've had in the first two episides, we've decided to drop that'

They made their point. Now it's just dumb and a waste of time. I can't believe it carried on to the second episode.

'We can't stand the voice of that bloody American so we've duct taped his mouth closed'

Problem 2 solved.

I watched it on the PS3 and had the same problem - it just gave up in the end and wouldn't play at all. I have noticed the picture quality on Prime is not as good as Netflix generally.

I watched on my fire tv and it worked fine in 4K.

Also worked fine on the built in app on my tv.

My thoughts so far.

The concept of tent, and around the world I'm ok with, thought of course it does "mentally" feel a little disjointed when it comes to something like round our track.

Don't like the new track, no idea what it's like scale wise, but the old one, just seemed about 4x the size (wild guess) and too many 1000 miles away from where they are.

Don't like new fat moaning stig person. I have no idea how good he is, but he just seemed overweight, and moaning all the time.

Don't like the kill a celebrity thing, so hope they drop that, joke has run it's course already.

Did not, like this weeks "Feature" went on too long.

I know I'm sounding like a lot of Don't Like's here, but being honest.
Other aspects great, still finding their feet of course.
They just need to be very careful as there is a point where, just making a mess of something which can be entertaining, falls into, just being silly for silly sake.
Over playing something.

Like a dry British humour being misunderstood by an American director and ruining it as it's pushed over the edge.
I fear there is a danger of that, they need to hold themselves back.

Early days, but the bulk of the team is still in place, so they should know.
Danger is, the more money so we need to push it further.

Less can be more.

I hope they can do more of the old school Top Gear Specials, which I loved and can be watched multiple times.
