Blu-ray Steelbook Thread

Since the Play.com Steelbooks thread is drifting off topic into discussing other Blu-ray steelbooks, I thought I'd start us off on a new thread for talking about any Blu-ray steelbooks, past or present.

Here's a couple for starters:

Cleopatra (1932) [Masters of Cinema] (Limited Edition Dual Format SteelBook) - pre-code Cecille B DeMille "erotic tour-de-force"

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - Restoration Edition Metalpak (Blu-ray + DVD)

What is a steelbook?

Web Definition

A SteelBook is a high quality case similar in size and layout to a keep case but featuring an outer metal shell. The interior of a SteelBook is typically made of plastic and features one or more hubs, or inserts, for disc based media or clips for paper based media.

http://www.steelbook.com/

The Original Story
"The SteelBook media packaging concept was developed in 2002 by the innovative thinkers at Glud & Marstrand A/S, Scandinavia’s largest manufacturer of metal packaging. Glud & Marstrand has a highly distinguished 125+ year history in metal forming and packaging."

They have their own site!

This one looks really nice (can't seem to link to it): Wickie und die starken Männer:
Quote:
Wickie und die starken Männer (Vicky the Viking) is a German-Austrian-Japanese cartoon series about a young Viking boy. It premiered on German TV in 1974.

The SteelBook™ Limited Edition features the original TV series remastered as film on DVD. The artwork features the series' title character on the front. To maximize the effect of the colours, Universum chose a high gloss varnish, giving the artwork its bright appearance.

Edit: Sadly it's a DVD not a Blu...

Play.com Exclusive Universal 100th Anniversary Edition SteelBooks

Play.com Exclusive Paramount Centenary Edition SteelBooks

Discussions regarding pricing, pre-ordering etc. are probably better suited to Dragon Ninja's excellent [Bluray] Preorder Play.com Exclusive Steelbooks - from £9.99 (Paramount, Universal) thread (located in the Bargain Forum).

I feel I shall be here often!

Cannot wait for the Lady Snowblood release, as well as Ninja Scroll. May wait to see what happens in regards to prices for the latter, as the Akira one dropped to around a tenner pretty quick.

Here's betting because of my decision, the Ninja Scroll will go OOP and the prices will sky rocket!

Hahaha, tell me about it, or rather, don't.

I had a few on DVD and told myself I wouldn't start buying Blu-ray Steelbooks. Then Future Shop & Best Buy started their twelve week Disney promo in Oct-Dec '09. So I said I would just get those and then it just spiralled out of control.

Now, if there's a movie that I like, I check for a Steelbook release first.

That is a hell of a list you have there mate. Cant compete with that !

Play.com make the image look better on the website than what the steel actually looks sometimes. If anyone finds out what the watchmen steel looks like could someone post a pic. Cheers

I've only got a few, and nothing vaguely rare, outside of Captain America and the German Tron steel. Ohh, and stupidly recently I splurged about £50 on the John Carter Viva metalbook.

I've got...

2012
Captain America
Chronicle
Demons & Demons 2
District 9
Drive
The Expendables
Fast & Furious 5
Final Destination 5
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Hulk
Kick-Ass (original release)
Machete
Minority Report
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Paul
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strange Tides
Predators
Return of the Living Dead
Robin Hood
Scarface (US)
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Super 8
Terminator 2
Terminator: Salvation
Thor
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Wanted
Wolfman
X-Men: First class

Ordered...
Avengers Assemble
Bourne Trilogy
The Frighteners
Jaws
The Raid
Saving Private Ryan
Serenity
The Terminator
Total Recall

Also got the Braveheart steelbook but I found out it was just the first disc when it was on the way so it's going on eBay.
Hoping Saving Private Ryan won't just be the first disc otherwise that will too. Love a nice steelbook but not when the extras are sacrificed.
Would prefer the Futurshop metalpack of Avengers too, as it has the proper title and I'm assuming the UK version still won't have the post-credits scene. Don't like the spine on the HMV steelbook either. However, the Futureshop one will probably be an expensive pain in the arse to get hold of.

I am finding steelbooks are making me blind buy films that I've not seen like Chronicle and Super 8 but not regretted any purchases yet.

Anyone got any predictions for future steels? I think Prometheus and Dark Knight Rises are pretty likely.

No one got the Metropolis steelbook then? I'm kicking myself for not buying it when it was released... now goes for £40 odd on eBay

Eureka are doing one for the Giorgio Moroder version, but its DVD only.

Confession time: I had *every* UK Steelbook up to King of New York and then sold them all over the last month on the Bay. I was the same with Criterions (and glad I wasn't a child in the era of Pokemon!).

What broke the camel's back is the recent actions of Play.com. I'm all for providing exclusivity for collectors to scratch the proverbial itch but I think their recent decision to release over 50 Steelbooks in the space of 3 months to be pretty heinous, especially when the majority of their output is re-releases.

With the exception of a precious few (Metropolis, Thor, Captain America) I made back what I paid for them and little more. The behaviour of some on other forums (buying 10+ with each release) and their misguided belief that their investment is going to accrue major $s or £s in the future will be severely dented with each "new" release.

Not having a bash at those that enjoy it as a hobby, but those individuals treating it like a business/cottage industry will get their fingers burnt. Play on the other hand will be laughing all the way to the bank and I imagine whichever employee suggested that Steelbooks were a way to sting people into double and even triple dipping on certain titles will get a very nice Xmas bonus this year!
