The Deer Hunter blu-ray

Hi - does anyone know the different between the two UK BLu-rays ? Apart from the packaging (and price!) of course:

The one on the left has different packaging (and is more expensive).

Looking deeper into it, the white one is barebones and the black one has these special features:

Realising The Deer Hunter
Shooting The Deer Hunter
Playing The Deer Hunter
Unknown Images: The Vietnam War
Introduction by Mickey Rourke
Trailer
Audio commentary by Michael Cimino
BD-Live
Booklet: Analysis by Ryan Gilbey, film critic of the New Statesman

Defiantly want to pay the extra Ł4 and go for the left one IMO as it gives this classic film the attention it deserves.

Review for it HERE

That looks lovely.

Now, who want's a slap? I've lost count of how many people whine to me about having to "Skip past the first hour to the point where it gets going"

I think I prefer the first hour to the rest of it, when it all gets surreal and odd. Brilliant film, fatally flawed, but an experience. i've never felt the need to upgrade my Aussie version, and if the UK disc has the same sort of picture quality, its absolutely superb.

I had a lot trouble appreciating The Deer Hunter when all we had was terrestrial TV showings and muddy VHS and that horrible early DVD release; but with the DVD releases and especially the HD-DVD disc I now feel that it's probably the best US film of a golden decade (the 70s). Lots of great shots in this film but one that stands out is the scene where Christopher Walken stumbles down that blue-lit street to the Russian Roulette game for the first time (at 1hr 44mins 59 secs). A painterly shot. Cimino is rude about his "cameraman" Vilmos Zsigmond, on the commentary track because he was only around for the time it took to shoot the movie. But this film isn't only great because of its script and acting, it looks great as well and that's principally because of the cinematography.

Keep meaning to get a Blu-Ray of this but I'm waiting for it to be released on a US disc.

This "skip the first hour" thing is nonsense. The film only works as a whole.

Just remember the blu still has a pitch problem on the dts 5.1 track. The 2.0 track is fine though. I still bought the film knowing this earlyer in the year still and estential purchase.

Cimino is a master ***********. I wouldn't lend credence to a single word that came out of his mouth. At least Billy Friedkin is amusing when he lies or retroactively makes stuff up, Cimino is a foul, self-aggrandising tool. See what he said about serving in Vietnam, for example, all LIES.

Ok cheers guys, just wasn't sure if the White pack was barebones or they just omitted to write the extras on the packaging.
Its in my Top 3 films of all time so I have to buy it.

Did someone say they skip the first hour ??? They obviously dont understand the film, its in 3 acts. Thats like walking in to a play at the start of Act 2. Ridiculous.

I should really add this to my collection:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCom...deerhunter.htm

I'm having a bit of a war film craving at the moment. Just ordered The Thin Red Line and I'm now considering The Deer Hunter and Platoon.

Cimino does push the boundaries of self-indulgence during the wedding scene, though.

It's been an age since I've seen the film... I remember liking it but I was only 12 or so.

I remember reading some accusations that the film unfairly portrays the Viet Cong as vicious animals or thereabouts and the US as clear victims. Fair? Or an overly PC reading?

Well apparently the whole Russian roulette thing was completely fabricated for the film as Viet Cong didn't do that to their prisoners. Even though other films, TV shows and video games inspired by Deer Hunter have shown it happening.

They used a bag of Revels, not a gun

Odd advertising campaign that "Eat our chocolate, some of it tastes like crap!"

Don't forget the awesome 'Beer Hunter' scene from Dead Man's Curve.

Ta for that. I'm now thinking Meet the Feebles.
