Apocalypse Now

Finally, Apocalypse Now is coming to BD with a new transfer and in two versions - The first edition will include both Apocalypse Now (The 1979 Cut and Apocalypse Now Redux) and will also include over nine hours of special features. The second edition will add the seminal making-of documentary Hearts of Darkness, a 48-page collectible booklet and storyboard, photo and marketing archives.

I'm a tad worried about the "new transfer" bit. As long as they do a good job like in the earlier James Bond films with regards to cleaning up the print, then that's fine. But if they've done to this what William Friedkin did to The French Connection, then I'm going to be worried.

Still, a first day buy nonetheless. Does anyone know what all the fuss is regarding the Hearts of Darkness documentary? I take it it's long!

The street date is 19th October (USA).

Hurrah.

I wonder what aspect ratio it'll be in? Surely, now is the time for a 2:35/1 release? We don't have tiny little tellies anymore.

What's the fuss about HOD? Not sure, its not that long (90 mins i think), but its been OOP for a long time due to various rights issues. Its a genius little film in its own right, filmed at the the same time as the main feature you get to see all sorts of utterly legendary things (Sheen's heart attack, some Harvey Kietel footage, the Philipine army recalling all its helicopters while shooting etc). I've still got it on VHS from when it was on BBC2, so will be happy to retire that version.

Hearts of Darkness isn't some long-lost treasure, not really. I've had it on Laserdisc for years, and there was a decent US DVD released a few years ago, complete with its own special features.

Amazon.com

Yes, there's been a new HD transfer of AN. No, it won't be in 2.35. Definitely getting the all-singing all-dancing version though.

Isn't this *the* title that really gets the geek bitch-fights going?

Even worse than the Kubrick 'debates'

Will be buying regardless

I dunno about "bitch-fights", Lou. Every thread I've ever seen on this subject rarely deviates from "Storaro is a tosser". Which he is.

Right, time to sell the 'Complete Dossier' DVD and the HoD platter also.

Nope, it just looks stupid on a 16:9 display

That said - my fave Vietnam film - so day 1 for me!

Was just expecting the bloated Redux, so this is great news. HoD too.

Not quite sure how to fund the next few months. This, Psycho, Exorcist, Inferno, Evil Dead, Paths Of Glory, Battle Royale - to name just a few! Good stuff.

I've only ever seen bitch fights when people start arguing about the end credit sequence and when/where/if it was shown on tv with it complete etc. Not for many years though.

Yeah, for reasons that escape me now, it used to be a bit controversial in the VHS days.

That depends I'm sure the first Region 1 DVD release finished with a dark screen with credits but included the camp exploding sequence as an extra - can't confirm because I sold it for pennies to movievault.

The latest US DVD looks very good indeed on a biggish screen so it will be interesting to see how much of an improvement the Blu-Ray will be. Now the smoke of the 70s has cleared, we can see IMO that AN is better than the Godfather movies.

Nine hours of special features could include the two 3 hour commentaries.

Doesnt seem that long ago since I got rid of me two seperate UK release cuts and got the Complete Dossier. It has sat there unwatched but I will definitely be all over this on Blu-Ray, just hope the transfer makes upgrade worthwhile. Nice to have HoD included finally.

If memory serves me correctly, it was only the 70mm version that ended without the explosions and no credit titles. The 35mm version had the big bangs and credit titles.

This should be amazing on Blu (redux) was always one of the best dvds to show off A/V so this should be the same.

Nice to finally have some special features aswell since the dossier never really had anything on the making of the movie itself. It had alot about the A/V side of things though. Gonna dave me having to buy hears of darkness now been meaning to get that since they released it on dvd.
