Brazil coming to HD

I'm not sure if this is widely known - but Terry Gilliam told me yesterday that Brazil was going to be out on HD-DVD later this year. Apparently the new transfer had shown up a lot of the birdman wirework and it had to be painted out.

Fraid not - only had a few moments with the chap during a Forbidden Planet signing to promote his new movie (I got him to sign my criterion 3 disc set which is why he mentioned it I guess).

Is it not likely he was referring to the new Criterion DVD editions due in September that are using transfers from a newly restored, high-definition master?

I wondered that afterwards but he definately said HD-DVD. Of course - he could still have got them confused.

This is a title that could make quite good sales from early HD adopters. I would have thought it much more likely to be released by Universal than Criterion though - they were quite slow into the DVD market originally and I'd expect them to be more cautious this time around.

Ah well if Universal own the rights then I guess a HD-DVD release is quite likely, but i'm not sure if there would be many extras as I doubt Criterion would license them any of theirs (much like Dazed and Confused on HD-DVD, which only retains the Universal DVD release extras).

HD releases are getting very good publicity, and I'm sure that those few people who actually have HD sets will be eager to snap up any titles that are released.

I suppose it all depends on how much extra it will cost to author an HD disc over SD - since they are using HD masters already it shouldn't cost too much more.

I'm patiently waiting for the new Criterion version with the anamorphic transfer.

I assume they still do - the first DVD release of Brazil in the US was an extras-free Universal disc, so an HD-DVD would probably follow suit. It won't be a substitute for the 3 disc set, I suspect. I'll be happy upgrading the movie DVD in mine to the anamorphic version.
