Trivia: On the Kiki R1 when Kiki is offered coffee by a kind elderly lady, the subtitles says "hot chocolate". I guess it's not PC having a young girl drink coffee.

The americans have a thing about caffeine being really bad for you, so giving it to a child would be 'terrible' to them, whilst in Japan/Europe it's not really something that's a major concern. I had coffee as a child anyway

Also, when Kiki and Ursula are going back to Ursula's cottage they hitch a lift. In the US version it's implied that the guy they hitch a ride from knows them as they didn't want to encourage young American girls to hitchhike.

from Cartoon Brew:

Quote:
Studio Ghibli presented an early Christmas gift to Tokyo's Nippon Television Network on Wednesday. A huge mechanical clock, designed by Hayao Miyazaki. The Mainichi Daily News reports:
The clock, which is 12 meters tall, 18 meters wide and weighs 28 tons, was made from 1,228 copper plates, and displays 32 mechanical trick features. The clock resembles images from Miyazaki's film "Howl's Moving Castle," and at fixed intervals blacksmith dolls come out of the clock as music is played.
Nice Christmas prezzie!

Too bad I missed this one. Castle in the Sky is still missing in my collection. Maybe I should just buy the DVD.

I just got Only Yesterday R2 for my birthday. As lousy as the Optimum discs are, they do look quite nice next to each other...

I don't know I really didn't like L:CITS but apparently the dub is rubbish.

My Sky+ has deleted three ghibli, one of them I can't remember the name, it starts off underwater with someone cracking open a sunken spaceship/submarine. Anyone know what that was?

Laputa probably has the worst dub of all the Ghibli films, Dawson bloody Leery indeed. The scene you describe sounds like the opening to Nausicaa, but she's not underwater and that's not a spaceship/submarine, it just sorta looks that way at first.

That's probably it, I knew it was an early ghibli and one that reportedly mangled the english version

Ah, i heard about "Iblard Time" being released on Blu-ray but I couldn't find anything out about it!

Is it me or does the first one just sound like "The little mermaid"?

The Iblard stuff looks interesting. In addition to loving Whisper of the Heart, I got to see The day I harvested a star when I was at the Ghibli museum last year which features Iblard imagery.

As for Gedo Senki Australia and parts of Europe are getting it in the first half of April and Optimum have said it's going to get a theatrical release here so I'd expect it in cinemas April/May time.
