It's from some outfit called Palladium. Does anyone know who they are and what their track record is? Is this just another of those companies which release DVDs of spectacularly awful quality? I hope not because, according to the HMV web-site, Human Desire is only one of several interesting movies that Palladium are issuing on DVD.

So, who has any experience of Palladium DVDs?

Just had a quick look at the pic on my PC, Joel. Nothing special, but perfectly watchable. Better than nothing, thats for sure.

Thank you. I've since realised that Human Desire is due to be issued in Region 1 as part of a Sony Film Noir box set. That may well have better picture quality. (The previous Sony Film Noir box-set had superb picture quality.)

I'll probably test the waters with Palladium on some of their other releases. As I posted earlier, they have some very interesting movies on DVD.

They are part of Orbit Media who specialise in titles supposedly out of copyright. They issued The Yellow Rolls Royce and the picture quality is abysmal.

Oh dear! Thanks for the warning. I won't test the waters with any of their other discs after all.

While the City Sleeps

This is being released on 26 July in the UK (Dana Andrews, Ida Lupino). Together with The Warlords thats two of my wishlist ticked off this month.

I've always liked While The City Sleeps - just look at that cast! - despite the really drab cinematography. I hope very much this is a proper DVD from decent elements because my ancient VHS recording from the BBC is due for retirement.

Well, just a few days after posting in another thread that I don't trust DVD Beaver's screen caps at all, I have to admit that I'm probably going to buy a DVD because of his caps.

I've looked at his review of Where Love Has Gone - which I haven't seen since its original general release - and those images he has produced look very clean and clear. I'm really tempted!

I'm still after 20th Century Fox CinemaScope movies that haven't been released in the US or the UK. I've just recieved The Left Hand Of God (1955) from Amazon.de (Die Linke Hand Gottes) got it from a market seller for under Ł10 delivered. A very nice looking picture, 2:55 (& 16:9 anamorphic), & good stereo sound. I see they've just released The Egyptian, I wonder if it's as good as the Spanish release?

I've just received an email circular from Amazon France. They are listing a Blu-ray disc of Rififi Chez Les Hommes in March. Known in English speaking countries simply as Rififi, this is one of the most influential heist movies of all time. The main robbery sequence which has no dialogue and only minimal sound effects has since been used as a kind of template for robbery sequences in innumerable other movies.

There is far more to Rififi than just the robbery. The movie's high reputation is justified. I'm very interested in this forthcoming BRD.
