Mrs Coulter looks a bit off to me, but I'm sure it'll all be fine Looking forward to it!

I've never read the books.

Or watched the one film they made.

I'm think I might start on the books tonight as I'm at a bit of a loose end.

I read the first two books many years ago, been meaning to finish off the trilogy. I actually have them on Audible as full cast audiobooks which sound like a fun listen.
This does look interesting, mostly because of the casting of Dafne Keen who was excellent back in Logan.

The books are fantastic. The movie had a great cast (Nicole Kidman *is* Mrs Coulter) but they sanatised the religious control aspects because some Christian fundamentalists in the US got annoyed. Plus loads of other things were wrong with it that I won't spoil here, but the film was a massive missed opportunity.

The film was a bit rubbish. Enjoyed the books, although they are hard going at a couple of points

Enjoyed the first episode, seems very authentic to the book. Particularly like Dafne Keen as Lyra. I think they may have chucked too much exposition up front but it's probably necessary for the story.

Did the book have helicopters? That didn't seem right.

One question...where the **** are all the dæmons? It appears they only let main characters have them, really took me out of it

One for every single person on screen in every shot would seem too much for their already massive CGI budget it would seem?

Ok, I get what you're saying, but at the same time, don't start with text on screen saying how everyone has a deamon, then show everyone without one. Also, and I'll spoiler this for people who haven't read the books

In a series that makes a big deal about not having a deamon being not the norm, showing a load of people without them breaks that internal story logic

not every deamon needs to be cgi. The books state that most of the servants have dogs, how expensive would it have been to have a load of dogs floating round in the laundry and kitchens.

Don't bitch about the lack of effects, I'm surprised it isn't just a bloke in a polar bear suit

I agree I also noticed the lack of daemons. Also until they hit adulthood their daemons are meant to be able to change shape, but they've consistently looked the same so far?

No, Pan changed shape at least 4 times that I can remember, he was a

Ferret, pine martin, bird, butterfly. Although we never saw him change and I wanted to see him as the dragon during the kid fight

I just rewatched the episode. There are definitely moments where there were a a lack of background daemons, but most of the shots did include various dogs, cats and birds just hanging around. They blended in to the background if I wasn't looking for them.

At any rate, it's a bit much to expect a TV show (even one with a decent budget) to be able to provide that amount of effects constantly.

A stronger second episode, and I really like that they decided to mix up the story and begin introducing elements from book 2. Took me by surprise! Ruth Wilson was particularly good here, and Dafne Keen is able to match her beat for beat.
