do video replays really slow the game down ? I don't watch much Rugby, just the odd game in the pub and it never seems to slow the game down, however I guess the frequency be more in football. Have sometimes seen people suggest using video replay along with a "call" system, giving each manager two or three attempts per game to disputes a decision

Often seen people say some of these decisions can cost clubs a lot of money, a decision not going there way, loose game, loose points, get relegated etc but not sure how often it happens

Regards Jose, I've always had a soft spot for him and after last season of just seeing the dull one sat with his clipboard it's nice to see some passion back in the dugout, just needs controlling a little.

Depends, at what point do you stop the game for a dubious penalty call? What if the other team have stuck it in the back of the net at the other end? Rugby is a lot more stop and start.

Would you appeal a penalty call if it's going to get your man sent off for diving?

To make them accountable what could you do? Ban them for making an error? Bring up other referees who aren't as good but haven't been banned yet?

Replay the game when the referee holds his hands up to making a mistake?
Pierluigi Collina seemed to get it right most times, he was so good you could allow for a few mistakes. There is no excuse for todays ref's being so poor, they do have TWO linesmen to help them, are all three inept?
Video replays should not slow down the game at all. If the oposition went on to score a goal, it would be the same as a goal that is offside, it won't count, but I'm sure play would be stopped before that.

Video replays are being trialled at the moment, talk of the prem adopting them as soon as next season.

Personally I think the tennis method would work best, three calls a half maybe that either the manager and/or captain can claim, if they're wrong they lose an appeal and if they're right they get the decision and retain the claim.

It shouldn't be necessary along with goal line technology, a lot of the entertainment in football is what gets called and what doesn't, but I guess with the financial implications of success and failure these days it demands a higher level of accuracy.

Sad but true.

I think it'd ruin the game, it's alright a tennis player making a challenge on a close call, takes a few seconds. You'd end up with teams of experts in rooms watching the match trying to get it called back over some off the ball incident the referee didn't see.

I'd guess generally the mistakes even themselves out, you should be careful what you wish for.

Why can't they just add two refs on the field instead of all these extra linesmen etc? Two pairs of roaming eyes, with a head referee who makes the final call.

They NEVER even themselves out. If you have a TV judge or even a couple looking at 3 screens in real time, they could often correct the ref without replays. If a replay was needed & if there is nothing obvious after a couple of views & needs more scrutinising, then just carry on as per ref's call. They could also time replays, say 30 seconds or whatever.

Ok, give it a trial and judge it on its merits.

I can see a video ref coming in for certain decisions like a goal scoring opportunity or penalty claim the ref missed (think there were 2 or 3 dubious handballs last weekend) that shouldn't slow game down too much. Other things like a dive should be subject to a citing, like Rugby and retrospective yellow card.....although if the dive is to win a penalty then that will obviously need to be looked at there and then.

The line refs seemed an interesting idea at the Euros but what did they do? THey didn't seem to have a job and I don't recall them making a call

West Ham are lucky Zlatan scored, as I expect that's why the ref has let go the rugby challenge from behind and then the appalling tackle from the keeper after he scored. As blatent as can be.

Good possitive, fast start. Miki is looking good.

And someone was saying incidents even themselves out... West Ham should be down to 10 after a minute. He intended to hurt an opponent, he should get banned retrospectively for 3 matches. But that won't help us tonight.

We're pretty wasteful up front but we're looking good again. Rooney playing really well. Might even open a beer and start to enjoy a match if we can keep this up.

edit: jeez, their first shot on target. Back in the fridge it goes.

I'm not sure what has happened to Martial but he looks nothing like the player of last season.

edit: Good finish Martial. Back to the fridge I go.

Hopefully you have got your second beer out now? We should really go on and smash them in the last 30 mins and get a couple more.

Seems we are winning this despite the officials. It does mean we have Angry Rooney - who is so much better than what we usually get.
