Expecting mine today also. Still not sure I'll be keeping it but I'll definitely be giving it a play and see how it compares with the WDTV.

It looks like both iplayer and Demand5 are there on day one now, which is nice to see.

I've kept mine on the off chance it's better than the WDTV I use in the bedroom. if it can stream DLNA from PLex, voice support, netflix, have Amazon support then it's probably a better bet.

Coming tomorrow as card ordered with expired!

Mines turned up - but not exactly sure whats the best way to use this.

It's going to be a replacement for my RPi, which can't cope. I use Plex to watch everything, but through XBMC.

So, native Plex app or XBMC with Plex. Not sure.

Plus, I need to see what FWare version it's on, to see if it can be rooted.

Mine turned up too. Very recent firmware (51.1.4.0_user_514005520, dated 1st October) so no rooting.

Also, can't get xbmc to work! Appeared to sideload fine, but crashed on launch.

Seems like they're all going to have the unrootable firmware, as they're all going to have the language menu on first-run so you can choose between German and English.

Sucks! I tried running mine through first-setup with the relevant domains blocked to prevent the initial update but they just refuse to go any further if they can't check for/ download an update.

Guess i'll leave mine in it's box for a little longer. As long as XBMC/plex was working then it would probably be ok.

My big concern about the native plex is whether is needs to transcode - it shouldn;t do, but then doesn;t mean it won't.

I've got XBMC on there. Currently launching it through the settings menu which is a ballache so I'll look at setting up the shortcut trick which lets you launch XBMC instead of one of the official FireTV apps.

XBMC seems to run very nicely.

I'll try Plex later, but I really don't want to be doing any transcoding (for quality reasons mainly, but also I don't want my server working any harder than it needs to) so not sure if I'd use it beyond an initial play. As I understand it you can't get 5.1 via Plex on FireTV so presumably it always transcodes audio, unless it just downmixes on the firetv.

Thanks - plex does have what they call "directplay", which is supposed to determine what the device is capable of and old transcode what is needed (i.e just send the file, or maybe just transcode audio).

Never been convinced it works, but then again I don't utilize the official Plex apps, which bypass this, so maybe it's better than it was 3-4 years ago.

That's very odd, given I can't get it to run at all. Can you confirm your firmware version so I can compare?

The menu structure appears to have changed on my fire also. The screenshots I've seen suggest the the app list should appear once 'applications' is selected from the 'settings' menu. I have to choose 'manage applications' from within the applications submenu before I see the installed apps.

My firmware is: 51.1.4.0_user_514006420

It did an update when I first ran it so that is presumably the latest FW.

I installed XBMC using the wiki guide: http://kodi.wiki/view/Amazon_Fire_TV

Downloaded the APK linked on that page which is: xbmc-13.2-Gotham-armeabi-v7a.apk

Enabled ADB on the FireTV. Used the Amazon FireTV Utility App to sideload XBMC and ran XBMC via the 'manage applications' menu you mention.

I've now sideloaded llama and used that to set things up so XBMC now launches when I select the Flixster app.

Thanks for that. I'll have to have another try later.

Does FiredTv still work as an alternative launcher? I notice it mentioned a bit, but hasn't been updated for a fair few months.

On the xbmc install I used this guide

http://www.alashiban.com/running-xbm...step-tutorial/

Very straight forward and used the spmc "fork". I'm not sure what that means but I do know it's running and streaming from my NAS perfectly

I might try to sideload llama (if I can work out how).

Reset to defaults. Tried it again. Still didn't work!

Might allow it to update (which I had blocked) in case the update is actually a genuine bug fix

Any lag with 1080 etc. I have a Revo 2gb and wanted something newer and less power hungry.

And is there a better remote for it?

Just installed SPMC via ADB (for those new to using ADB, can always google 'Minimal ADB and Fastboot' and install that rather than getting the entire Android SDK).

I also installed Plex, and it tries to transcode the first file I tried, not looked into it further, but same file played fine on XBMC via SMB shares.

Now to look at Llama...
