Bluetooth/Airplay speakers

Hello,

I've currently got iPod docks/speakers in a few rooms around the house, but now we've both got the iPhone 5/5s, we'd need an adapter to use them. Which gives me an excuse to just upgrade them completely and get something wireless...

We're a Mac house so something that supports Airplay rather than just Bluetooth might be a good option as it seems to be nicer to use.

Potentially there's two different kinds of devices I'm after:
  • A small, all-in-one unit for the kitchen/bedroom/conservatory.
  • Something that can stay hidden in the hi-fi cupboard and connects to either an amp, or direct to a proper pair of external speakers

Being able to send to multiple speakers at once would be a nice bonus.

Anyone have any recommendations for something that fits either of those two descriptions? It looks like a Sonos might be ideal, but I don't like the idea of having to use their app to play your music - plus they're silly money! Conversely, there's plenty of £30 supermarket jobbies… Anyone found a sensible middle-ground?

Cheers

Pete

Sonos is stupidly expensive and there is some real rubbish out there in the Bluetooth speaker market.

I bought a Logitech UE Air Speaker a few weeks ago from Richer Sounds. It does have a pre-lightning IOS dock in it which might a waste of time for you but it is an Airplay speaker which means you don't need the doc anyway. It is probably a bit big for what you want but it produces decent sound and gets good reviews.

Reviewed there at the £300 price but now available from Amazon and Richer Sounds for £80 - £100. Two thumbs up from me!

I did look at the Logitech, but it's a bit of an awkward size/shape for my kitchen. In the end I opted for a Pioneer A3 Airplay jobby - http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...s/A3+XW-SMA3-K

The sound quality is by all accounts excellent, and as a nice bonus is has a 5 hour rechargeable battery so I can take it out into the garden if I like.

As for the living room option, I decided that I could just set my always-on media server up as an Airplay server, then get a little low-power amp (probably a car amp) that I can leave on and attach to some ceiling/wall speakers. Should be a nice cheap solution that doesn't leave me faffing around with settings and turning amps on etc.
