I've run Truplay Tuning and have then compared my two play:3s to my B&W DM603 running off a Chromecast Audio.
The Play:3s are brighter in the treble and actually go down nearly as low. Their midrange is actually not bad at all, it's the brightness and clarity of the high end that was distracting me.
As a direct comparison I think the sonos handles
MP3's better.

Had a mooch around Currys/PC World today and they had a nifty little demo set up of a new Play:5, a Play:3 and a Play:1. I was really impressed with the 5, the stereo sounded great and even in the environment it was in it sounded full and quite warm, the bass wasn't too boomy even at high volumes.

I've been toying with getting a proper amp setup and speakers for a record player for a while but plug sockets and space are a real issue and this speaker has gone right to the top of my list now, especially as it looks like you can plug a compatible record player straight in. It'll tick my analogue and streaming needs nicely.

Had a demo of the playbar too, was some naff dance rubbish coming out of it to begin but then 'Purple Rain' came on and I was grinning ear to ear, even as I left the shop you could hear it with such clarity right from the back of the shop.\

Am I right in thinking if I get a Play:5 and hook it up via ethernet that essentially becomes the hub from which others connect to? if I then get a playbar it will then connect via wifi to the Play:5?

They're all wireless. No need for ethernet.

edit: if you want the 'sonos subnet' which means each speaker extends the network, then you need to connect one speaker via ethernet. Otherwise, if your router is fairly central, you can just use wireless.

So what does the Sonos Bridge do?

I got one free with my Play:3 and assumed you needed it to connect to a wireless network?

I am pretty sure the Bridge is just a legacy of where Sonos used some in-house wifi system. It's no longer required.

The bridge is useful if you want to avoid using your home wifi, or if you have particularly bad rooms from a wifi coverage perspective.

So, (and I'll google this lately but I'm after instant gratification) one of the several firmware upgrades my Sonos has had over the last 3 years will have enabled "standard" wifi?

not entirely, it will have given you the option to use your own wifi network. It defaults to using its own mesh network from a bridge or connect etc.

New owners no longer have to have these non speaker components, although the mesh is very reliable.

Apple Music for Sonos is now out of beta and in the latest official release.

There's still no option to like/favourite tracks in the Sonos apps, and the radio stations aren't a patch on Google's IMO. I've hardly bothered with it during my free trial to be honest and I won't be subscribing when my three months ends shortly.I'll either go back to Google Music or Spotify, but I will try Tidal out when we're back in the UK and have a better/more reliable connection.

I'm still waiting for Amazon Prime to be available on Sonos. Didn't get on with Apple Music, and my premium Deezer subscription has just expired. Might take a look at Tidal

I've had Amazon Music on my Sonos services for months. Is it not working then? I only tried it a few times and assumed it wasn't working for me as it's geo-blocked and I'm outside the UK.

I've got Amazon music, but isn't that just my stuff I've either bought or uploaded ? Prime should give access to stations and their library of songs.

Or am I wrong ?

Ah, I don't know then. It doesn't show anything for me at all and I've bought a fair amount from Amazon over the years, that's why I'd assumed it was geo-restricted.

Edit: Yes, you're right. I was logged into it on my wife's Amazon account as she has Prime. When I add my Amazon account instead it picks up all my Amazon purchases.

I love my Sonos kit, but they are still nowhere near sorting out the lack of Audible streaming as an option. They blame Amazon, but people who didn't update their software are still able to stream so it's clearly a Sonos problem.

They are quite arrogant and unresponsive when it comes to dealing with customer feedback: a simple 'cast to' would help fix it. Doesn't take away from the speakers though. Just annoying.

Does Audible support Chromecast? If it does and you have a Play 5 (or something with an aux in) you can cast to that to the Sonos. Not a perfect solution but it works for me. I recently bought a Chromecast Audio for Ł15 and have it connected to my Play 5. It's set to auto play on that speaker (in the Sonos settings) whenever some thing is played to it so it's just a case of 'casting' to that Chromecast from the app.

I use it for Pocketcasts and it works really well, better than I'd hoped actually.

Just had an email from Plex saying that Plex will now be available on Sonos. This could be good for people who have Sonos and use Plex.

Two big things that immediately occurred to me about this;
1) It could be a good way to get around Sonos' 65k track limit of a local collection if you have more than 65k tracks.
2) Collection sharing. One person with a good music collection, decent internet connection and a Plex subscription could let a load of people all access their music collection. Not sure what the limit is for users on a Plex pass, but looks like it might be 100? That should cover a lot of friends and family.

A third plus, probably for a lot fewer people (and not me) is that those people who have 24/192 music in their collection could add Sonos speakers to their set up and Plex can transcode the audio to 16bit FLAC.
