I once saw Kenny Baker in a cafe in Blackpool. I was a kid at the time but had seen the SW documentaries and knew who he was. It must have been about 1988-89. My Dad took my younger brother to the bathroom and Baker was using the facilities. He obviously couldn't reach the urinals so was merrily peeing down a wee drain in the corner of the room.

True story

Just watching a new hope for the first time in ages and can't help feeling that it really looks quite poor. Hard to put my finger on why but there seems to be lots of telecine wobble throughout the film and most of the actors look like they have bad sun tans. It's not my TV set up either as everything else is fine and I've been through calibration.

It's not just you. I dunno about any telecine wobble, but Lowry's fake grain pervades the picture and the colour is pretty freaky at times, especially on the first film.

It's a shame really. Strangely (in my opinion) Empire looks the best out of all 6 films. Good colour, sharp picture and the fine grain is just about in tact.

I think Empire's just as bad in parts. The grain just hangs there in the Hoth scenes and the colour's way off early on. Gets better though.

It's annoying that we'll never get anything better than the 2K masters. For someone that feels like he's advancing technology he's really ****** up there!

True dat. It's deliciously ironic that the man who dragged Hollywood kicking and screaming into the digital age won't do right by his own films, saddling them with DVD-era remastering jobs that are seriously flawed. No doubt those same masters will be used for the 3D versions too.

Just watching a new hope and suddenly noticed how low res some of the special edition additions look. The majority of the film looks pretty sharp but scenes such as the entering mos eisley additions looks decidely blurry.

Any idea what kind of resolution they would've been rendered at back in 1997?

That'll explain why it looks pretty awful then, it's like something has smudged the screen. The next shot is them pulling up in the speeder to be questioned by the stormtroopers about how long they've had the droids and it suddenly looks quite sharp again.

One is in inside a dark room the other under a bright sun. Or perhaps the camera was smugged.

Re: Star Wars movies coming to BD in September 2011 - Part II

Pixar were rendering at about 1.5k at that time (Toy Story) so I imagine it would've been a similar benchmark at ILM.
